So now I do experience that where I look back.

And I'm hosting an event in London in October, and I'm co-hosting it with Anne-Laure Lacombe, who is the founder of Nest Labs.

She's a New York Times bestselling author.

She's extremely iconic and impressive.

On August thirty-first, California man Derek Callejo was sentenced after pleading guilty to sending fake harassment and ransom communications.

What has not changed is the last strong visual lead is still the masked armed person on the Nest doorbell footage from the night she disappeared.

And I remember I partnered with a, a great venture capital firm when I used to work in VC called Kleiner Perkins, and when I was at Kleiner Perkins offices, uh, you know, I met with John Doerr, I met with this, this guy named Randy Komisar.

Uh, and Randy had just at that time in 2012 or '13, whatever it was, uh, made $3 billion on a company called Nest, you know, a thermostat company, which he, which was sold to, to Google.

And I asked him, I, I, I said, I said, "Randy, when the engineers came in, how amazing was the MVP, the product when they showed you?" And he said, "Chris, they didn't have a product.

They came in with a block of wood that looked like the Nest thermostat." I said, "Why'd you invest?" Uh, and then he basically said, "I was blown away, uh, by how polished the engineering team was, how they could sell, et cetera." So remember, ideas are commodities, execution is not.

Uh, companies will al- or investors will always, uh, uh, rather invest in A management team with a B business model instead of a, a B management team with an A business model.

Because they know that your, your end market and your product is gonna change over time.

And I think this is the direction a lot of things should go.

And I feel like a Nest acquisition by Google sort of paused.

I was at Nest, so I feel for all the things that are not happening.

So I feel like it's paused and it would be good if we can move that in that direction again, where we have that thoughtful home.

Well, we also have, speaking of early Nest days, we've got a new app for Thread.

This is currently in beta, and the developer had reached out and said that it was okay if I shared the test flight with all of you.

So if anyone wants to try this app out, it is awesome.

So the idea is that the smarts that are built into it... are done locally.

It's not like, say, if you have a Google Nest system, that's all done up, you know, so when the camera recognises a person or it tells you how many people are in the room or anything like that, or when you've left, it turns off your heating, that's all done locally.

In the cloud.

And the problem with that is privacy.

And these are standards that are used to allow sensors and home automation devices from different brands to be compatible and to communicate with each other.

So it's very much against, you know, Google, for example, would try and, you know, if you want to have a Nest camera, then you have to have a Nest thermostat and all the things need to be Nest.

But with these sorts of standards, it's...

The difference between this blunt approach and an intelligent, schedule-aware, occupancy-aware, weather-integrated system can represent a significant reduction in energy consumption without any reduction in comfort and, in many cases, with an improvement in comfort because the temperature is better calibrated to actual needs at each moment.

Smart thermostats from manufacturers like Nest, Ecobee, and Tado represent the first generation of AI-assisted home climate management, and they have been available long enough that their real-world energy-saving performance is well documented.

These devices use occupancy sensing, detecting whether people are actually in the house, combined with schedule learning and weather integration to optimize heating and cooling in a more sophisticated way than a conventional thermostat.
