African leaders earlier gathered in Ghana's capital, Accra, for the annual Elevate Africa, convening to discuss how the Campaign for Reparations can move beyond recognition and resolutions to concrete action.

Among those taking part were Sierra Leone's President Julius Madabyo and former Presidents Joyce Banda of Malawi, Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria and Amina Gurib Fakim of Mauritius.

During the special presidential roundtable discussion, my colleague Wahiga Maora asked former Mauritian President Amina Gurub Fakim whether an apology from King Charles could be expected as calls for slavery reparations continued to feature prominently during his nine-day Caribbean talk.

you know words have power and words have consequences i'm sure the legal advice of all these leaders have told them the power of apology and what would that mean in monetary terms evangel and right now with the state of many of those countries that have enslaved so many parts of the world i mean to begin with if you look at what britain has done and so many other other countries as well The financial is going to be a very big burden.

And that's not something that we can afford to do.

So we have to keep on educating, keep on writing, keep on teaching our kids true history as it happens.

That was a special presidential roundtable discussion featuring former presidents Amina Grib Fakim of Mauritius, Joyce Banda of Malawi, Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, and Sierra Leone's president Julos Madabiu in conversation with my colleague Wahiga Mora.

Now, I caught up with Wahiga in the studio to unpack some of the key takeaways from that discussion and began by asking him what young Africans are saying about the question of reparations.

I'm extremely familiar with Nigeria.

And in fact, during the tenure of President Good Luck Jonathan, I was asked to design for them a resilient power grid that would bring power to the entire country, which I did, but it required a security overlay.

So we had an ISR system to go with it.

And when it came time to implement the system, they had purchased 57 GE frame seven generators that were in storage in a warehouse waiting to be deployed.

So why am I going to bother about things that's rigged? The ball comes undone.

Second tenure of Muhammadu Buhari, and we are here now getting close to three and a half years.

Jonathan's era was all over the news.

You understand? From Obasanjo's era.

Yes.

Yar'Adua was running, an Igbo man too was running too.

They choosed Yar'Adua.

Goodluck Jonathan was running, an Igbo man was running, they choosed.

Buhari and Atiku ran, they choosed Atiku.

Using tribe as a yardstick to support a candidate, um, for election is stupidity of the highest order.

Um, baby lawyer, when you made reference to the previous government of Obasanjo and even up to that of June, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, um, I wanted you to point out that there wasn't much of this bitter tribal leaning and over display of stupidity as we have it since 2015-

... went to, to dump, uh, their, their candidates on INEC, INEC just ignored them because INEC did not give them access code to even upload the members.

Uh, you understand? They are the one that said, uh, um, Goodluck Jonathan, former president, is their candidate.

Mm.

And we know that Goodluck Jonathan hasn't come out to say he's running in this election.

But because they are incurable optimists, they sold form, people bought form, and now insulting them.

Because that's the only explanation I could, I could offer for those who INEC may not have, uh, published their name and who are members of PDP.
