I love that.

That was the year where the IHA took the Goodall Cup back from the league and they held a state competition once again, as they used to always hold.

And so that's actually the whole reason why the H. Newman Trophy was first created, was that they had to replace the Goodall Cup as the championship trophy that year, which Adelaide Adrenaline won.

Adelaide also won the state championship that year.

And then they had to retrospectively basically add the Adrenaline on to the trophy.

Canberra Brave were flying into the final series in top form, but in a tense grand final decider, Newcastle North Stars were crowned the 2026 Goodall Cup champions in Melbourne yesterday.

The Brave threw everything at the North Stars, but the brick wall defence of Newcastle goaltender Martis Trinker helped secure his team a thrilling 2-1 victory and an Australian Ice Hockey League title for the first time in a decade.

The Brave forced Trinker to make a whopping 49 saves.

nearly double what brave goaltender Joel Hasselman had saved, highlighting the impact of Newcastle's defence.

That was the best we played defensively all year, North Stars captain Liam Manwaring said, after lifting the Goodall Cup with tears in his eyes.

It all goes back to the adversity we've been through this year.
