A reminder for commuters, Barrie Line GO train service this weekend only runs as far south as Downsview Park, with the line shut down between there and Union Station.

Anyone looking to reach downtown Toronto will be redirected to TTC service at Downsview Park.

Other adjustments will be made to the line service starting on Monday before it goes back to normal on the 22nd.

Meanwhile, an investigation into a GO train derailment at Union Station in February confirmed it was caused by missing screws on a railway track just outside the station, leading to the rail shifting about 3.5 centimeters.

That confirmation was part of a report released by Metrolink, which also said that over-reliance on visual inspections instead of a geometrical approach had a part to play in crews not catching the issue earlier.

Refugee advocates are criticizing Ottawa's decision to end a policy that helps some refugees reunite with children and partners in Canada.

Following the derailment, Metrolinx and Toronto Terminal Railway conducted a joint inspection blitz that found forty other sections of the rail around Union where the rail fastenings did not meet the required standards, including missing fasteners, rolled plates, mixed configurations, and locations where additional screws were needed.

GO Transit is very safe.

As highlighted in other incidents, including a near derailment that The Star reported on near Oakville GO Station based on, on confidential Metrolinx documents, Metrolinx is not regulated by the Federal Transportation Safety Board, and there was no independent investigation into the February Union Station derailment.

Lindsay said after the board meeting that riders can trust that GO Transit is very safe.

"I would put our safety record up against anybody else's, and this particular incident has prompted us to go even further," he said.

Reductions are expected to last until next spring.

GO Transit is reducing weekday train service between Niagara Falls and Toronto starting Tuesday, a move said to be among temporary network-wide schedule changes.

Mark DiMarco, who is originally from Niagara but now lives in Toronto, is not a fan of the weekday service cuts, adding he was eagerly awaiting a revised schedule for September.

Instead of the improvements I was expecting, I noticed that GO Transit is making drastic reductions to the weekly service.

He said this in an email to Niagara Dillies.

Going forward, instead of three round trips to and from Niagara, GO Transit is now offering a single train each way Monday to Friday.

At least the weekend trips still remain at four round trips on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.

The 1.02 p.m. and 7.59 p.m. trips from the Falls to Union Station have been canceled, while the 9.10 a.m. and 10.07 p.m. trips from Union Station to Niagara Falls have been cut.
