Glycocalyx

And most recently, I have a publication called Gut, Brain and Glycocalyx, a portrait of Parkinson's that explains the physical chemistry of Parkinson's and how different things can actually impact the glycocalyx in different ways or different parts of the body that can present as different symptom profiles.

I wanted to explain a little bit about that terminology because glycocalyx to somebody outside of biomedical sciences or biochemistry studies, Biological sciences, period, but may not be familiar with that.

Smoking destroys what's called the glycocalyns.

Glycocalyx, what is that? The glycocalyx is this fuzz-like lining of the arteries of the endothelium, and it acts as the first line of protection against what's called small, dense LDL particles from invading the artery, artery wall and getting stuck underneath in what's called the intima-media space.

And then it develops into this soft, inflamed plaque that we, we've been talking about.

And then at some future point, um, you know, of stress, whether it's physical stress, mental stress, or both, it can rupture through that already damaged lining of the en- endothelium.
