Homicide, violent crime, political instability, militarization, incarceration rates, arms imports, the works.

There's more police on the streets, more cameras, more bag checks.

That visible security apparatus deters some kinds of opportunistic crime.

But that comes at a cost the Global Peace Index captures, and the homicide rate doesn't.
