Some have s- some have successfully taken their property with them, others have had to, have, uh, have lost it.
Jim GarlowHOST
60:13
And what they have to do, just like the United Methodists, if you leave the United Methodists and become a Global Methodist, Global Methodists being the conservatives who actually believe the Bible, United Methodists the left-wing who don't believe the Bible at all, you, not only do you have to, uh, you paid for your building the first time in the tithe, but you have to buy your building a second time.
Jake DellGUEST
60:31
Buy it again.
Jake DellGUEST
60:32
Yeah.

Anyway, before I feel really bad about this, we didn't air this part of the conversation, but I was just doing some small talk, and I knew he was a longtime Methodist, and so I said, so are you a part of the Global Methodist, which is the new kind of like the splinter group that actually believes in Jesus? I said, or are you part of those pagan folks? And he's part of the pagan folks.
Todd StarnesHOST
53:40
Uh-oh.

Jason NixHOST

He's part of the worship crew, the squad leading us in worship here at General Conference 2026.
Jimmy WilliamsGUEST
11:38
So that was the, the, the driving force of, of why the, the denomination split.
Jimmy WilliamsGUEST
11:43
And why I think that really is a significant thing is if you know our, the current split that's going on with the Global Methodist and United Methodist, the situation is, and, and again, if you follow that, the United Methodist has, I, I'm, this is a horrible way to say it, but the United Methodist Church has gone off the rails.
Jimmy WilliamsGUEST
11:58
They, they've completely lost scripture.
Jimmy WilliamsGUEST
12:00
They're unbiblical now, and that sounds harsh, but, but again-
Jimmy WilliamsGUEST
12:53
I, that's what I still, what it was in 1800.
Jimmy WilliamsGUEST
12:56
But even though they, they kept fighting it, the bishops themselves overruled them and did what they chose to do.
Jimmy WilliamsGUEST
13:04
So even though their government structure said that the lay people had some authority, and what the conference said was what the church would do, the leaders and bishops who were actually in charge said, "We don't care, we're gonna do what we wanna do," and that was the ultimate split with the Global Methodists.
Jimmy WilliamsGUEST
13:19
So why this is all important there, to get back to, to try to, try to follow, set the stage for what we're going at here, there has to be a balance between the authority of, and I'm gonna say denomination, but what I, what I mean is the general church, the, the church collective overall, the, the, the, the thought of the church, the s- the spirit of the church, it needs to be the focus of the mission of the church in all decisions that are made.
SarahHOST
1:16
This is something that's been kind of rolling around in my head a lot recently.
SarahHOST
1:20
At the time of recording this, we are just days out from the Global Methodist Church's second general conference happening in Johannesburg, South Africa.
SarahHOST
1:29
And there's a lot of conversations with this general conference about discipleship.
SarahHOST
1:35
At least that's what I'm seeing online from colleagues that are going to be going online.
SarahHOST
2:34
Church has become like, you know, we come on Sundays, we might come on a Wednesday night or some other day during the week.
SarahHOST
2:40
But then how do we live out what we're learning in those couple hours we spend at church each week, the rest of the week, and what we do with life.
SarahHOST
2:50
And so I guess it's a huge discussion I'm seeing amongst my colleagues in the Western tradition, especially in the Global Methodist Church.
SarahHOST
2:58
But I don't know, is this an issue to in the Lutheran, you know, churches that you all are serving or have served? Um, you know, how, how can we help grow disciples and not just make people not just get them in the door and like, you know, get them to say the sinner's prayer and then like, okay, we're good.

What can we do to try to solve this issue? How can we make sure that congregations feel supported, that congregations have people in the pulpit who know how to preach? What do we do about communion? What do we do about pastoral care? How can we make this work for today? So that's what I want to talk about today is the clergy shortage.
SteveHOST
4:47
I wonder, since you've helpfully diagnosed or named something that is certainly true broadly across our denomination, the three of us who are Lutherans, Erica, in your experience in your tradition in the Global Methodist Church, what do you all hear from your leadership or other colleagues about? Are there similar patterns there? Is it dramatically different? Is it regional? What's your sense?
EricaHOST

So, I mean, as a global Methodist, we're younger than the pandemic.
EricaHOST
