No question about it.
Nicholas ThompsonGUEST

On the other hand, it's also awesome, right? So what did I do today? Well, first thing I did is I went into my bot with Glean, which is the company we use, which sort of adjudicates AI use and allows us to sort of partition access and make sure that different people are able to access the right data sets.
Nicholas ThompsonGUEST
28:56
It's like an interface between the bots and your data, right? And I went into Glean and I ask it the same thing I ask every day, which is, okay, I have an agent and a bot.
Nicholas ThompsonGUEST
29:04
Identify everything that's happening in our product and engineering team and identify everything that needs a CEO-level decision, right? I ran another proprietary bot that I can't tell you about that looks for specific errors in a specific section and finds them in a really interesting way that allows me to help, you know, correct things that have gone wrong, right? So, AI is helping me run the business better, both like specifically and— That

sounds pretty technical and not even something that maybe you as CEO should be dealing with.
Kelly MonahanGUEST
26:21
I think it is, again, just that jagged frontier is very much in the HR realm as well.
Kelly MonahanGUEST
26:26
I think oftentimes some of the other friction comes from, and this is actually research my good colleague Rebecca Hines has done over at Glean, is there's so much rework happening because of AI slop.
Kelly MonahanGUEST
26:37
So I don't think we've been really good prompters.
Kelly MonahanGUEST
26:40
I don't think we're really good at communicating with AI, the work that needs to be done.
JamesGUEST
2:08
Uh, I've been at Lightspeed, you know, for the last eight years.
JamesGUEST
2:11
I'm a partner on the growth team backing software and just AI companies as they scale, and so I've been involved with just a number of these companies that we've backed, such as Grafana, Glean, Wiz, you know, Stripe, and Databricks, and just seeing up close how some of those organizations have been built, how they aggregate capital to fund it, where really others stall.
JamesGUEST
2:30
Like Antoine said, the company's kind of been evolved from a frontier lab into a vertically integrated AI company with open models and enterprise platform and a forward deployed engineer strategy inside their customers to really drive adoption and ROI, and now kind of doing, uh, uh, its own compute.
JamesGUEST
2:47
And similar to, to Antoine, I was also, you know, born and raised in Paris for my first twelve years, so it's also a good excuse to come back to my roots.
Matt GrahamGUEST

Yeah.
Matt GrahamGUEST

I know you, you know, there's a big ghosting culture, so at least you didn't do that.
Matt GrahamGUEST
1:38
At least you didn't just click the X and close it out.
Matt GrahamGUEST

You had a little combo first, but I mean, I've seen tons of it.
Travis ClingerGUEST

You can use, you know, Claude Cowork is probably one of our most popular ones.
Travis ClingerGUEST

Uh, we work with Glean, which is great for kind of combing all the internal resources.

I, I remember like five years ago, it's like, oh, you know there's that deck, and you've seen it once, and you're like, it's the perfect deck for this presentation.

I, I remember, like five years ago, it's like, oh, you know there's that deck, and you've seen it once, and you're like, "It's the perfect deck for this presentation." How do you find it? And you would spend an hour searching through the different drives looking for it.

Arvind Jain founded it in 2019 after a decade building search at Google and co-founding Rubrik.

In 2024, OpenAI reportedly told its own investors not to fund five competitors.

Glean was on that list.
Nakul MandanHOST

Our conversation today with Arvind is interesting for two reasons.
Nakul MandanHOST
1:16
One, he holds that pole position against the most powerful companies in tech.
Nakul MandanHOST

The AI assistant for knowledge workers, the big labs want it, Google wants it, Notion wants it, tens of startups are chasing this.
Nakul MandanHOST

But as all of them now make forays into it, and especially the big labs, let's start with them.

Is an SE at Glean very different to the type of SE you would have seen hired at Salesforce?
Gavin GuinaneGUEST
0:04
Demoing skills, like in the kind of classic SaaS SE world, nice, but not the most important thing I look for.
Gavin GuinaneGUEST
0:10
I like to get folks who've had some post-sales experience.
Gavin GuinaneGUEST

Otherwise, you have SEs coming in who just do demos and

Chris ClarkHOST

Why do you feel the demoing skills are sort of less important within the context of Glean? What we're doing is trying to bring insights from...

We are joined today by Chris Clark.

He is a former distinguished solutions engineer that spent around 15 years at companies like Glean, which we actually worked at together, Slack and Salesforce before deciding to move into career coaching full time.
Ryan KruegerHOST

Chris has really leaned into starting his own business, which I honestly, I have so much admiration for is just taking the leap and betting on yourself.
Ryan KruegerHOST

But he did this because he really believes in the pre sales professionals and our career path as solutions engineers.

I see enablement or technical enablement is a role in a lot of companies.

There was a guy actually I was chatting to, Dan Iacono, you'll know him from Glean.
Chris ClarkGUEST
35:23
And amazing guy, right? Like best guy I've ever met in terms of technical enablement.
Britni BorrelliGUEST

It goes back to the motivations and it goes back to like, what are we trying to do long term? And a big part of the conversations I was having early on was understanding like, what are everyone's pitfalls? What are the biggest struggles that they're trying to overcome in every single time it came back to data? And to me, that is the easiest thing to be able to solve because once we can get it to a place where we can all pop into it and start asking questions, man, we can absolutely sprint.
Britni BorrelliGUEST
27:09
Whether it's leveraging something like Glean or having one place to ask the super intelligent questions across Gong and Salesforce and everything else, having it in one place is is really important um but it then also goes back to who do we have at the helm for our technology stack and who is managing that and what is their long-term strategy there and that was a big part two of the conversations i was having is you know what is their likelihood that they're going to want to do something completely different because the executive team might have a particular thought on where they want to go, but those that control where the data is and how it's deployed, you know, maybe they have a completely different opinion on that.
Britni BorrelliGUEST
27:59
And it's, it really, it goes back to building relationships with people that are meaningful, but also, you know, making sure that you also, if you're going to be responsible for making the changes and, There's a lot of revenue leaders that are looking to take on responsibility or new roles or things like that.
Britni BorrelliGUEST
28:22
My biggest advice to them is you make very clear, make sure that you have it bulleted that you are responsible for XYZ.
