Gladiator

Uh, [chuckles] by default I think that lands Russell Crowe last, even though I think he is still such a great actor.

[laughs] Um, you know, like, obviously "Gladiator" is such a, a huge, huge role of his.

Um, and, you know, "A Beautiful Mind," which I haven't seen for a long, long time.

And honestly, I, I even still kind of ride for "The Pope's Exorcist" most recently as a bit of a, like a, an absurd movie that he, he really gives himself to, you know? [chuckles]

Yeah.

And, you know, this is like a, a, you know, something Ridley Scott does visually in his, in his movies where, you know, if you look at Gladiator, it gives a massive sense of scale sometimes just by showing, you know, Russell Crowe or whoever at the foot of a massive column, and you just see, like, a big toe, for instance.

You know, the, the audience, you know, thinks, "Well, shit, if the toe's that big, if it's 10 times the size of his head, how big's the statue?" And you don't necessarily see the statue.

Now, I don't know if there's a, particularly a toe in the movie, but as an example.

And I shortly thereafter changed the theme to the music that you hear now, of course, because it is a fight theme.

It is a battle theme from, as it happens, the film Gladiator.

And it's Hans Zimmer, who's the composer.

We are in a battle.

There's a million movies made about it.

Sometimes the fact that you're able to hone in on something so specific and so particular and see that so much human effort, so many collectively, so many thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of man hours went in to just getting the weather reports, it kind of makes the theatre of war that much bigger because you think, well, shit, You know, if so much went into just getting the weather, how gargantuan is this entire enterprise? There's a thing Ridley Scott does in his films, I think he did it in Gladiator a bit, where to visually convey a sense of scale, you know, he might have Russell Crowe standing there next to the foot of a statue.

You don't see a wide shot of a little Russell Crowe against a big statue.

You see his whole body and you just might see the toe or the calf of the statue.

All right.

And in the number one spot, we had Ridley Scott's Gladiator, where Russell Crowe is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the armies of the North, general of the Felix legions, loyal servant to the true emperor Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and he will have his vengeance in this life or the next.

Was that his, like, first big movie, Russell Crowe?

i just mean the speeches what do we think better better do you like the speech better than gladiator you like the speech better investor and commander the uh i don't know if you guys remember that or let's give them something from hell or whatever it was um i don't know how fresh in that you guys's mind that is but that's that's a iconic iconic russell crowe speech

that one i would have ran into battle for too russell crowe gives that speech I mean, Gladiator to me feels like this is Hollywood and this is a Hollywood speech, which I love.

What other, what was the sword, there's a sword and sandal, Gladiator, so the director of this, Wolfgang Peterson wanted to direct Gladiator, but then dropped out, and then we saw how good Ridley Scott did, he wanted to do his own, so he made this, but it was, I think, originally offered to Christopher Nolan.
