Girl with a Pearl Earring

The next part of our story takes us here to the Marriott House Museum in The Hague.

Inside this museum are some of Vermeer's greatest works, including The Girl with the Pearl Earring.

This has recently been part of a big project called The Girl in the Spotlight, where experts from around the world examined this painting in detail.

So Vermeer would take paints from all over the world, as we saw, and he'd bring them together.

And using a remarkable combination of skill and his work with colors, he'd create paintings like these, which give us a remarkable look into life at the time.

We simply don't know.

Is this something that is lost to history, or this is something that people are continuing to research to this day?

Well, as part of the research project, The Girl in the Spotlight, one of our research questions was the geographic origin and the origin of his materials.

But I don't think that's what you're talking about.

No, I also noticed that the Girl with the Pearl Earring, which is perhaps the most important and certainly best known Hague-based painting, has gone on tour yet again and is in Osaka, as far as I know, in Japan.

They can't seem to get enough of us.

Uh, definitely.

The prizes are drink parasols.

The Art in Umbrella Covers exhibit, which has famous paintings like The Girl with a Pearl Earring or The Kiss by Gustav Klimt on umbrella covers.

There are a lot of really good umbrella cover stories.

One of my favorites is that a young woman from Peaks Island, Eleanor, was living in Germany, and she found a black umbrella cover on the side of the road next to the Berlin Wall.

So in that sense, I think, uh, human art is here to stay, so I'm not too worried about that part.

And, uh, you know, people can make a otter face replaced with this, uh, Girl with a Pearl Earring.

You know, they can do that, but it's not the same-

Osaka, one of the most famous paintings in the Western canon went on display here on August 21st as Girl with a Pearl Earring took the center slot in an exhibition of Dutch old masters.

The masterpiece by Johannes Vermeer, 1632 to 1675, can be seen at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka.

Princess Aiko joined dignitaries at the exhibition's launch on August 20th.

She viewed the image from various angles and commented on its eyes.

"Even when viewed from quite an angle, I can still feel the girl's gaze," Aiko said, looking impressed.

Titled Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Masterpieces of the 17th Century, the exhibition is organized by the Asahi Shimbun and other organizations.
