His first memorable aviation experience came when his father took him flying in a Piper Cub.

Tex joined the military and was quickly on course 5801, doing his flight training on the Chipmunk at Centralia, the Harvard in Moose Jaw, and the T-33 at Gimli.

He earned his wings in June 1959 and subsequently trained on the F-86 Sabre at Chatham.

His first operational posting was to 430 Squadron at No. 2 Wing in France, where his first flight was on December 11, 1959, marking the beginning of flying the Sabre during the Cold War.

Yeah, there's a lot of people debating that policy right now, for sure.

Yeah.

So you joined as a pilot, you went to Moose Jaw, you trained on course 5801, progressing from the Chipmunk at Centralia to the Harvard at Moose Jaw and the T33 at Gimli.

What do you remember most about learning to fly in those aircraft? Can you maybe take us through each phase a little bit?

Yeah.

um that scene because they're in the gimli slider restaurant okay the gimli slider it's named after an air canada plane that took off without enough fuel and its two pilots had to glide down without any power for an emergency landing at gimli industrial park airport so

It's literally named after this.

And they have a population of 6,569 people.

And they're kind of in the lower eastern part of the province of Manitoba.

That's how huge it is.

And it's about 80 kilometers north of the city of Winnipeg.

Now, just a couple of things, because as soon as I saw Gimli, I just got a feeling that this is a place I'd like to see one day.

Now, I'd like to see it in the summer.

Yeah, that's right.

I'm actually doing this from Gimli, Manitoba.

It will be very frozen in a few weeks.

But not right now.

Blaine was quite keen on on the band's Rock of Ages, which I thought was a pretty cool, he's a very cool man.

That was a very cool one.

One of my mates, Mitchell, who's actually here with me, I've known him since 11, he's actually here with us in Gimli.

He was a big fan of Live and Dangerous, and another friend of mine, John Dempsey, classic record, Unleashed in the East, Judas Priest.

We would have, you know, plus 40 in the summer and minus 40 in the winter.

I've been to Winnipeg a bunch of times, but I spent a week in Gimli, Manitoba, if you can believe that.

So I got to know it a little bit there.

So Hamilton, widely regarded as one of the greatest golf courses in Canada.

did you end up getting like your pilot's license or anything with air cadets or? Yeah,

I got my glider's license, uh, Gimli, Manitoba.

Nice.

Prior to that, I did some courses in penhold, uh, air studies and, uh, Uh, I wasn't kind of an air cadets long enough to do powered license.
