My, my then girlfriend now wife played a Gillian Welch's time, the revelator for me.

And you know, that album starts with those kinds of dissonant notes that Dave Rollins played.

And I couldn't get over that when I first heard it, I literally thought I was like, it's out of tune.

Mm-hmm.

You know, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, The Posies, you know, what- you know, like, the, you know, if Lucinda Williams or Gillian Welch would be as big as Madonna.

Like they were just, there was a lot of, um, effort put towards that.

And I think in some ways, like that kind of thinking probably a- like ushered in, it was among the reasons that poptimism got ushered in, like was like-

I'm sent there.

Number two would be, um, Miss Ohio by Gillian Welch.

I never can figure out if it's Gillian.

It's like Gillian Welch goes to the grocery stores in town, and people aren't going up to her, and it's like you just wouldn't do that.

You can see her from across the grocery store, and she has, like, I really do think that there's an energy about her that it's like she's queen, and, and not in a queen in, like, a, a rhinestone bedazzled-

And yeah, the only times I'm, like, kind of sad now is when I, like, I, like ...

When I first heard, like, Gillian Welch, I was like, it was, like, a year or two after my dad had died, and I was like, "Fuck, like, I wish I could have, like, shown him this."

Mm.

Or if he already knew about it and, like, we could have, like, bond over it a bit.

[laughs] Um, I think a lot about the difference between artists.

You know, you could take an artist like Gillian Welch, who, you know, has this incredible through line consistency across all of her work, and that's kind of the beauty of it, you know? That she inhabits a space that you can kinda return to over and over again with the records.

But there's-- because it's got that kind of traditional, um, element to it in the songwriting and in the production, that kind of really works.

But then you've got other artists like Björk or PJ Harvey or, um, Sufjan Stevens or Beck, you know, that kind of reinvent themselves completely with each record.
