Um, and that's where I think that we, we really need that call to adventure or else, well, as, as Gildor says, you know, you can fence out the world for so long, but, but eventually, you know, I can't remember the exact line, but you know, you can't fence it out entirely.

Eventually it's, it's going to open up to where you are.

And so you need to be able to make a home where it is that you happen to find yourself.

This is the soul of this entire chapter right here, summarized by Mary.

Sam reinforces this point and says, you should take Gildor's advice and bring us with you.

And then we get this... cool-down moment, Frodo is finally starting to understand.

And he says, well, I'll never believe you were sleeping again.

The Black Riders are going to look here at some point.

We need to get going.

I should probably follow Gildor's advice.

But what about Gandalf? Do we give him some more time? And then Merry's like, hey, man, I packed all your stuff.

He was then selected by Elrond to be a part of the Fellowship to be a representative of the elves rather than because of any particular abilities over and above the other elves that he might have had.

So what made him appear strange to Frodo on first meeting him? Well, Frodo had met quite a few elves by that point, Gildor and his company in the Shire, Glorfindel, Elrond, and the denizens of Rivendell, most of whom were of Noldorin descent.

But Legolas was the first elf he had probably met from Mirkwood.

Although we might think of all elves as being quite similar in Tolkien's world, they really weren't.

Yes.

And then another favorite, massive downgrade, I think, in Russian, but the elf character Gildor, who, again, is only really in the book, his name in Russian has been changed to Gerald.

Which you could think of either as just the Russian transliteration of Harold, or you could think of it like Geralt of Rivia, the Witcher.

But yeah, it's fun to see those little things.

Indeed, the role of music is one of the prime aspects of continuity between the legends of the First Age and the great epic of the Third.

One point of this continuity is the snow-white hymn sung by Gildor's company of elves as they pass through the Shire in the chapter Three is Company.

The sound of the hymn is described as being like mingled song and laughter.

Furthermore, even though it is sung in Sindarin, it is noted that the sound blending with the melody seems to shape itself in the hobbit's thought into words which they only partly understood.

Hello, said Mary, so that's what's bothering you.

Now, Pippin, my lad, don't forget Gildor, Gildor's one of the elves, Gildor saying, one that Sam used to quote, do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

But our whole life for months has been one long meddling in the affairs of wizards, said Pippin.

Gildor and his company come in singing and the Black Rider runs away.

Think of the virtue of Glorfindel riding down the road and the Ringwraiths withdrawing and him pursuing them.
