Earlier this summer, one of the co-dictators of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, uh, made an announcement at a rally for the socialist party that he leads that Nicaragua would simply cease to have elections whatsoever.

Gil Guerra studies Latin America at the Hudson Institute.

He testified the US needs to take action as Nicaragua's future spirals.

Nicaragua in recent years and in the past few decades has been on a steady but persistent slide towards authoritarianism.

Conservative candidates also made major gains in Brazil's Congress and Senate.

Joining us now to talk about it is Gil Guerra.

He's a fellow at the Hudson Institute with a focus on Latin America.

We've seen that here in the United States, uh, but it is something that, uh, is obviously taking form in Brazil as well.
