President, distinguished members of the Security Council, Last month, we commemorated the victims of the 2013 Ghouta attacks.

It was a stark reminder of the need to reaffirm that the use of chemical weapons anywhere by anyone and under any circumstances is intolerable.

Impunity for their use is equally unacceptable.

We urge Syria to continue its close coordination with the task force, notably on technical steps needed for the success of this mission.

The next phase in this process is the verified and complete destruction of the identified remnants.

As we speak, OPCW inspectors are deployed to Syria to verify the mechanical destruction of Category 3 chemical weapons, namely empty M4000 aerial bombs and volcano rockets similar to those used to deliver deadly chemical payloads on Khan Sheikhoun in 2017 and Ghouta in 2013, respectively.

We look forward to the OPCW reporting on this first destruction operation since 2013-14, destruction of the declared CW stockpiles.
