Get Your Wings

Well, that's like Aerosmith having a hit with Dream on in 1975 on an album that came out in 1973.

After they'd already come out with a second album called Get Your Wings.

Yeah.

Yeah.

also drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarist Brad Whitford, all of whom were in their early to mid-twenties when they cut Toys in the Attic.

After two-plus years together, having recorded two quality but tepidly received and poor-selling albums, the self-titled debut and the sophomore Get Your Wings, Aerosmith earned their stripes as a solid live act.

incessantly touring and not only building a rabid and loyal audience, but developing a style of songwriting that would come to identify the band as a down-and-dirty unit.

It was on Get Your Wings where Aerosmith began working with producer Jack Douglas, a protege of celebrated young studio wizard Bob Ezrin, and their go-to engineer Jay Messina, both of whom were mainstays at the legendary record plant in New York City.

Douglas and Messina understood the inner workings of the band, their unique personalities, and their grungy, bluesy style, which was duly infused in Toys in the Attic.

This is not unlike previous albums that we've covered here, like Randy Newman's third effort, Sail Away, and the third Ringo Starr solo album, Ringo.

one can look at Toys in the Attic as the true coming-out party for what Aerosmith will be in the heyday of the 1970s and even their eventual and unlikely comeback in the 80s.

Douglas has said of the New York Sessions, quote, Arlesmith was a different band when we started the third album.

And they just toured constantly after that.

Then they released their second album, Get Your Wings, in 1974.
