Geshurites

And the number of the days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.

Now David and his men went up and made braids against the Geshurites, the Gerzites, and the Amalekites, for these were the inhabitants of the land from of old, as far as sure to the land of Egypt.

And David would strike the land and would leave neither man nor woman alive, but would take away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the garments, and come back to Achish.

When Achish asked, Where have you made a raid today? David would say, against the Negev of Judah, or against the Negev of the Jeremiahites, or against the Negev of the Kenites.

All right, so David stays there in Philistia, not too long, but it tells us here a year and four months.

All right, in verse number 8, "...David and his men went up and invaded the Geshurites and the Gezrites and the Amalekites.

For those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even under the land of Egypt.

And David smote the land and left neither man nor woman alive." and took away the sheep and the oxen and the asses and the camels and the apparel and returned and came to achish all right so now the record's given david attacks these different you know we all say the ites of canaan here the canaanite the israelites gezrites amalekites and we don't know a lot about the gesherites or the gezrites but they were allies of the amalekites no doubt just believed similar to them ancient enemies of israel And so David goes in and David wars with these and he conquers them.

The Geshurites are also mentioned in Joshua 13, 13 as one of the Canaanite people that Israel had not expelled from Canaan in their initial entrance into the land.

Joshua 13, 2 also tells us they were aligned with the Philistines.

So David is doing... what his forefathers had failed to do during the times of Judges and the book of Joshua.

This is the land that yet remains.

All the regions of the Philistines and all those of the Geshurites, from the Sheol, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanites.

There are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, and those of the Yavim.

In the south, all the land of the Canaanites and Merah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of the Amorites, and the land of the Gebelites, and all Lebanon toward the sunrise, and from Balgad below Mount Hamon to Leba Hamoth.

Only allot the land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you.

Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.

With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh, the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them, from Aroah, which is on the edge of the valley of the Anon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the table land of Medeba, as far as Dibbon, and all the cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Amorites, and Gilead, and the region of the Geshurites, and Makathites, and all Mount Hamon, and all Bashan to Seleka, all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Adri, he alone was left of the remnant of the Rephain.

These Moses had struck and driven out.

From Aror, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the table land of Medeba as far as Debon.

And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon as far as the boundary of the Ammonites, and Gilead, and the region of the Geshurites, and Makathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salikot.

Now, some of these places will become very familiar to us in later biblical history.

All the kingdom of Og of Bashan, so again, this is just connecting all the dots, some of them going back to the book of Numbers and the early battles Israel fought, who reigned in Ashteroth and in Edre, he alone was left to the remnant of the Rephaim.

These Moses had struck and driven out, yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Macathites, but Geshur and Macath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day.

Okay.

Tsiklag, which is in the southern border of the land of Israel, and it tells us that he's there in Tsiklag for a year and four months.

Now, what are they doing while they're there? So we're told here, [in foreign language] that David and his men, they s- he's got 600 men with him, they are all fighters, and they spend their time fighting various des- desert tribes who regularly raid the southern border of Israel, the Geshurites, the Gizrites, the Amalekites.

And he still has to play a double game because, uh, by the way, it says that David wants to keep things very quiet 'cause he doesn't want Achish to know what he's up to.

So Achish would come to him and say, "Where did you attack today?" And David would have said, "Oh, we attacked the southern hills of Yehuda.
