Geshem

We switch our prayers in the Amidah from praying for dew to praying for rain.

A prayer called Geshem is added, which begins the process of praying for rain and marks the change of the season.

And we also... connect rain with kind of salvation.

It's not salvation in the metaphysical sense, but salvation in the very physical sense of having the abundance that we need.

And if we go into the Dirat Arai, We go out there into nature and say, Kaddosh Baruch Hu, I trust in you completely.

The love and the true love is very different, because we're going to see as the holiday goes on, we start doing these Hoshanot, and then we're going to start circling on Hoshan Araba, we're going to reach this big level where we're actually walking around praying for the fruits and the vegetables, and we're actually starting to pray for the Gashmiyot, and then we're going to get to Shemini Atzeret, and then we're actually going to do the Tefillah for the Geshem.

So it's interesting that on Sukkot, on the first level, we leave our homes and say the Gashmiut, the materialism, it really all comes from G-d. It's not what's important in life.

HaKadosh Baruch Hu really runs the show.

But then once we come to that realization, then in our tefillah, we start taking the physical products, the u'lav netrog, and we start saying to ourselves, oh, now I'm going to start praying for the Geshem, for the rain, because I'm actually going to need it.

So we begin with just the imagery of putting it together.

In the original Hashanah, Hashanot, and then Hashanah Rabbah, the tefillah becomes much stronger, and then eventually comes the next day, we're going to actually pray for the Geshem itself, for the Gashmiut, but we can only get to that level if we've recognized that, if we put things in order, and we understand the Limud of the Sukkah.

So the Sukkah symbolizes that we don't care about the Gashmiut, but then we realize that ultimately, we do have to have Geshem in this world, and we're going to pray for it.

What other holiday needs a kid? Because by Sukkot, you wear it for the Mayim.

Geshem.

Geshem, by the Geshem.

And by Pesach, by the Tal.

I think it was by Sukkot.

Ruach means wind, but ruach also means spirit.

Geshem means rain.

It also means materialism.

Gashmiut.
