Gertrude Ederle

Thank you very much, Steve Lamarr and Haygan, everybody.

You're watching a grand lady, Gertrude Ederle, leave the box seat next to the dugout.

She threw out the first ball here tonight.

America never seems to forget their sports heroes.

I found a book when I was about 10 years old, um, with a picture of this young woman striding down a beach with these weird looking, almost like a aviator goggles on her face.

Um, And her name was Trudy Ederle, and she was the first woman to swim the English Channel.

Wow.

And I was just really captivated because just even what does that mean? What does it mean to swim the English Channel? And what did it mean to her to be the first woman to have done that? And that image just really captivated me.

You need to go watch, I think I mentioned it to you the other day, Young Woman in the Sea.

That's the movie about Trudy Ederle.

She was the first woman to swim the English Channel.

Fantastic story.

It blows up.

And you know that Trudy Ederle swims the English Channel.

And yet, when it happens, you find that you are rewarded more than you could have imagined.
