O Alckmin deu essa declaração.

I can imagine two different lanes when thinking about the succession question.

That what Flavin was promising was too traumatic a cut, and it might help in the short term, but it would hurt you in the long term.

So I think we are going to see a determined attempt to to reduce the cost of total government spending gradually to see if they can bring down the trajectory of interest rates and alleviate some of that cost on ordinary Brazilian's lives.

You mentioned Vice President Geraldo Alckmin.

There is some talk of him being the new finance minister in this fourth term as a way of signaling.

So just in terms of the picture, Lula had...

On his side, his vice president, Geraldo Alckmin.

I think Geraldo Alckmin, he was a former governor of Sao Paulo, and he really stands out to be one of the possible successors of Lula.

He was the only guy who talked besides Lula in that event.

He talked before Lula, and he was very important to reassure parts of the center and even the right wing that ended up voting for Lula.

So I think the presence of Geraldo Alckmin kind of explains this voters that we were talking before that voted for other right-wing candidates and in the end voted for Lula.

There was even a meme that circulated a lot saying, if you are left-wing, you vote for Lula.

If you are right-wing, you vote for Geraldo Alckmin, who is Lula's vice president.

Why is that? Because, courtesy of the actuaries, the 81-year-old cancer survivor that managed to cling to power somehow last weekend does not really have time on his side.

In the next couple of months, we may all be getting used to a new name of Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who will have to take over the reins before the end of Lula's term.

Much is being made of this being a setback for Washington, but Brazil may not even be the main Latin American event of the week for a strategist in the U.S. Capitol.

That could be the return to Venezuela of Maria Corina Machado, the country's opposition leader, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and one of South Florida's most popular politicians.

It's a significant rift in the Brazilian society.

So I would hope that things will move on and Alckmin, Vice President Alckmin, would take over sooner or later.

Let's not forget the guy is 81 years old.

He's a cancer survivor.
