Tim StillmanHOST
5:06
Um, I think there are reasons for those selections, tactical reasons that we can go into.
Tim StillmanHOST
5:11
But once again, Geraldine Reuteler and Celina Čurčić left out of the squad.
Tim StillmanHOST
5:17
Another one of the questions asked in the pre-match press conference is when it co- 'cause we knew they were gonna have to leave three players out again, and one of the que- uh, I asked René about how she makes those decisions, but one of the things I said is, "Oh, maybe will it not be the same players this time?" You know, maybe to spread the pain a little bit so it's not the same players who are sitting out all the time.
Tim StillmanHOST
5:39
But it was this time, as well as Taylor Hinds.
Jamie SpangherHOST
6:53
The Lotta Wubben-Moy one I'm less surprised about 'cause I think they wanted a, a more of like a passing, passing center back pa- partnership, and I can completely understand that as well.
Jamie SpangherHOST
7:02
Uh, the squad depth rattles me a little bit, Tim, because again, like, we're playing Crystal Palace.
Jamie SpangherHOST
7:07
You've brought in these two players, and we have a really good question, um, in the questions that we got, which I'm sure we'll come back to, but someone's basically saying, like, "Did we just sign backups for backups again?" Like, are these players that are not going to raise the ceiling of the squad? Because I think we've all watched Geraldine Reuteler, and I think that she has, she packs a punch and she has a lot of talent.
Jamie SpangherHOST
7:27
I've not watched a lot of Celina Cerci, but it's, it's just beginning to look like these are players that René maybe doesn't trust.
Lucy MonkmanHOST
18:12
We're trying to stay positive, Jay.
Lucy MonkmanHOST
18:13
Uh, Renee Slegers spoke last week about making a conscious decision to expand the squad, but it means that three senior players had to miss out, including Circe and Reuteler who surely could have added a goal threat as well.
Lucy MonkmanHOST
18:27
I mean, this is the issue when you have squad depth.
Rory EvansHOST
18:29
Yeah, this is weird.
Rory EvansHOST
18:31
I mean, me and Laura touched on this a little bit last week as well, um, 'cause the chat last week was that Church and Reuteler were fit, but because they had an injury sort of impacted pre-season, they were sort of the ones to miss out as they kind of get up to speed with being fit again and what the t- new team needs from them, et cetera, et cetera.
Lucy MonkmanHOST
18:49
Yep.
Rory EvansHOST
18:50
And I kind of get that, and maybe that is the case for this e- weekend as well, but I wish there'd be a little bit more explanation because it is odd to have spent, like months creating this team and to have gone on a whim really early in last season, say, "These are two players we really want." I mean, Reuteler we tried to sign the last summer-
Lucy MonkmanHOST
19:07
Mm
Freddie CardyHOST
11:34
I mean, you could almost just go if Catley and De Almeida cover all four of those, you know, backline positions, you could go so almost risk averse as to bring on.
Freddie CardyHOST
11:43
another midfielder or attacker just into that squad as well because you're thinking well it's Crystal Palace we're unlikely to be sort of backs up against the wall defending but how do you see that changing moving forward in terms of Churchill and Reuters because surely they can't be not in the squad at all for a third successive week and Taylor Hines also left out it's going to be a conversation every week until injuries happen effectively.
Amelia WarrenGUEST
12:06
Yeah, I think that's spot on.
Amelia WarrenGUEST
12:08
You know, when you're looking at it, Crystal Palace at home as a game, you know, you are wanting more attackers than you do defenders.

10 MINS LATER

Amelia WarrenGUEST
21:48
I would like to see that.
Amelia WarrenGUEST
21:49
And if there's a way we can make that happen, I think that would be, yeah, it would be good to kind of see how that works out.
Amelia WarrenGUEST
21:55
But for somebody like Geraldine Reuteler, I think it's really difficult because as we've said, georgia stanway's playing really really well mario in a caldente's playing well kairi cooney cross came in and had a really good game and then of course you've got kim little on your bench as well who is your captain so that midfield area is a really difficult one to break into at the minute for her but again you know she will be chomping at the bit i'm sure to try and get in there in training this week and just try and be part of the match day squad find herself on the bench and maybe come on as a substitute and put in a good performance
Freddie CardyHOST
22:24
Yeah, I thought Sunday was the sort of game Reuteler could have come on and sort of caused a bit of chaos.
LauraGUEST
24:29
So I wish I could see the players that come, came from the Bundesliga, I think are very exciting.
LauraGUEST
24:33
So I wish I could have seen Reuteler, for example, play.
LauraGUEST
24:37
I hope we get the chance to soon.
LauraGUEST
24:38
But a- apart from the obvious, I mean, Georgia Stanway really, was really good, so, but she would be an obvious one.
Jessy Parker HumphreysGUEST
33:40
I think Rene Slagers' choice in terms of subs felt a little strange to me in terms of squad selection.
Jessy Parker HumphreysGUEST
33:47
Obviously, Churchill and Reuteler left out again, which to me makes me think that they're not Slagers' signings, which feels like...
Jessy Parker HumphreysGUEST
33:57
Not a great look, not a great vibe and is a bit bizarre I think when you look at some of the players who were getting on that pitch towards the end of the game.
Jessy Parker HumphreysGUEST
34:05
Did you really not maybe want to try something a little bit different when we're talking about Arsenal having had issues like this in the past? I think the thing that we can take from what happened with Chelsea the week before is you can go and put this right next weekend and Arsenal do have Dr.
Roberto RevillaHOST
6:18
Annika Borber, Elisa De Almeida, Steph Catley, Smila Hölberg, Kim Little, Olivia Smith, Frida Maanum, Caitlin Foord, and Stina Blackstenius formed a very strong bench.
Roberto RevillaHOST
6:30
It was Elisa's first competitive Arsenal squad appearance, while Geraldine Reuteler, Celina Čurčić, and Taylor Hinds were left out again.
Roberto RevillaHOST
6:43
We still haven't been given a clear explanation for those omissions, so I'm not gonna invent one, but Reuteler and Čurčić were signed to offer something different, and their absence is always going to attract attention if Arsenal reach the second half of games without scoring a goal.
Roberto RevillaHOST
7:05
We'll talk a bit about that more later.
Roberto RevillaHOST
12:26
She's also someone that is able to knit and connect play up in those areas where it's congested.
Roberto RevillaHOST
12:35
And then you've got Geraldine Reuteler, who, you know, no one knows what her position is.
Roberto RevillaHOST
12:43
But whatever position she plays in historically through her career, she has shown that she has the technical nous and wherewithal and footballing intelligence that she knows whether she's playing deeper or she's playing in a more advanced midfield role.
Roberto RevillaHOST
13:03
She understands that role and what's involved.

Roberto RevillaHOST
17:40
I It's difficult because the player that I would have brought on was not on the bench today.
Roberto RevillaHOST
17:52
And that was Geraldine Reuteler and the other one was Selina Churchy.
Roberto RevillaHOST
18:01
I'd have brought Selina Churchy on for Stina Blakstenius.
Roberto RevillaHOST
13:39
Lotte Wubbenmoy will obviously be pushing to come back into the side and at some point Elisa de Almeida might enter this conversation as well, but Steph Catley and Leah Williamson kept a clean sheet at Brighton and I do not see any reason to disrupt that partnership for the sake of demonstrating that we have other options available.
Roberto RevillaHOST
14:01
The one major unknown at the time I'm recording is whether Geraldine Reuteler and Selina Churchy will be available.
Roberto RevillaHOST
14:08
Neither was included in the squad at Brighton and we were told this wasn't injury related so we'll have to wait for further team news rather than trying to invent explanations.
Roberto RevillaHOST
14:18
My provisional team would therefore be Misa Rodriguez in goal with Emily Fox, Leah Williamson, Steph Catley and Honor Bardier across the defence, Georgia Stanway, Kim Little and Mariana Caldente in midfield with Lisa Baum and Olivia Smith either side of Alessia Russo.
Roberto RevillaHOST
14:41
I'd like to see her start on the right hand side of midfield combining with Emily Fox and Kim Little on that side and then I would like to see Olivia Smith starting on the left wing to combine with Honor Bardier, Alessia Russo and Georgia Stanway over on the left side of the field with Mariana knitting the two sides together.
Roberto RevillaHOST
15:04
Now that might look conservative when we have so many players waiting for their opportunity to start but the bench exists for a reason.
Roberto RevillaHOST
15:14
If Arsenal move the ball too slowly or the match begins settling into the familiar rhythm of possession without penetration, Rene should have enough variety available to change the problem rather than merely replacing one player with another who's asked to do exactly the same thing and we have game changers that I would like to see on in the second half like Geraldine Reuteler, like Selina Churchy and of course Caitlin Ford.
Roberto RevillaHOST
15:46
The decisive part of this match may be how quickly Arsenal can score the first goal because the longer Palace are able to remain compact and protect a level scoreline the more the afternoon will begin to suit them.
Tim StillmanHOST
5:41
And it was always going to be the case that two big international players were going to be omitted, um, from the match day squad.
Tim StillmanHOST
5:50
It turned out to be two new signings in Celina Čurčić and Geraldine Reuteler.
Tim StillmanHOST
5:55
What did you make of, um, li- like I said, two big players were gonna have to miss out, but, you know, two summer signings, were you surprised it was those two?
Jamie SpangherHOST
6:04
No, I wasn't entirely, to be honest, Tim.
Tim StillmanHOST
6:55
...
Tim StillmanHOST
6:55
Frida Maanum on the bench.
Tim StillmanHOST
6:57
That probably was probably a choice between Frida and Geraldine Reuteler, and then you've probably got a choice between Stina and Celina Čurčić.
Tim StillmanHOST
7:06
I, I'm with you in the respect that Crystal Palace at home is the next game.
Roberto RevillaHOST
20:03
Even though I put Lisa Baum in my predicted 11, nailed it by the way, there was still a part of me that expected Olivia Smith and Chloe Kelly to start together in those wider positions once we actually got to the first WSL game.
Roberto RevillaHOST
20:18
Selena Churchy and Geraldine Reuteler weren't in the squad which apparently wasn't injury related and something to do with making choices given the squad size but it meant that Lisa wasn't being eased into English football with a few minutes to go at the end of a certain win.
Roberto RevillaHOST
20:33
She was starting away from home at 19 years old in a fixture Arsenal haven't exactly found easy in recent seasons and then she did that.

Baum, confident, direct and brilliantly on target.

Roberto RevillaHOST
38:24
That's it for my first WSL match breakdown ever.
Roberto RevillaHOST
38:28
I love your feedback because it helps me to know what I'm doing right, what I'm doing in my approach that you love and what I need to do better at.
Roberto RevillaHOST
38:38
I'm still working on my profile of Geraldine Reuteler.
Roberto RevillaHOST
38:41
So please be patient.
