George Spahn

The family moved out to Spahn Ranch, a dilapidated film set on the outskirts of L.A.

In exchange for free rent, Charles' followers did chores around the property and performed sexual favors for the owner, 80-year-old George Spahn.

With a new home base, the group continued to grow.

Charles attracted a dozen or so new members during this time, including 24-year-old Tex Watson.

This leads Cliff out to Spahn Ranch, or the Spahn Movie Ranch, out near Chatsworth, where Quali's character, Pussycat, is living with these other young girls and some guys.

Cliff is intrigued to drive her out to Spahn Ranch because years ago, he shot some movies there as a stuntman, and he even knew George Spahn himself.

But what Pussycat really wants is to introduce Cliff to a guy she calls Charlie.

Now, we all know this is Charles Manson, even though it's not explicitly said.

He's out of town, which would explain why the whole gang is watching TV inside, something that Charlie normally forbids.

And the whole scene is just giving Cliff a bad feeling.

Like, would George Spahn really let this ragtag group of hippie freaks take over his ranch? Cliff wants to see George and this whole entire scene where he goes inside this rat infested house to look for George plays out like a scene in a horror film.

Cliff's moving down the hallway slowly.

The ranch had once been a location for shooting western films, but by 1968 the old sets were deteriorating and largely abandoned.

It was primarily doing business offering horseback rides, and Charlie convinced the elderly, nearly blind owner, George Spahn, to allow the family to live at the ranch in return for doing work around the place.

They also established an alternate headquarters in Death Valley that fall.

Those locations would play a large part in what Charlie allegedly came to believe was going to happen next.

But if there's even a chance they were real, I think they are a very good reason why hitchhiking is something we really, really shouldn't be doing anymore.
