So as you begin your new role at the University of Arizona, what opportunities do you see for research extension or sorry, education and partnerships with Arizona's dairy industry?

Well, I see so much potential to work with Arizona's dairy industry, you know, A lot to be proud of in Arizona.

My understanding is over 200,000 cows, $1.2 billion in economic impact.

And historically, research at the University of Arizona in the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences has already had a huge impact on the industry.

You know, research back a few decades ago on housing systems to keep cows cool, research on strategies for cooling cows, And now some current ongoing research is looking at the impact of cow comfort and mitigating heat stress during the dry cow period.

And our investigators are finding there are significant negative impacts of heat stress during the dry cow period on subsequent milk production, health of the cows, and some effects on the offspring.

So I guess another area extending upon the great reputation, the University of Arizona and the college which I have the privilege to lead has in heat stress research.

But what do you see as the biggest opportunities for improving dairy production over the next decade? And whether it's reproduction, animal health, precision tech, AI, or sustainability, where do you think the science is headed?

Another memorable moment for George Smith came during a close encounter he had with a female peregrine together with her very lively young, still in their eggs, unhatched.

I approached a nest whilst hiding behind a little bush, but I could see the nest through the bush.

And the female was calling to her chicks who were still within the egg.

So the eggs were cheeping and she was cheeping back to them.

And I was only four meters from the nest.

And that was a stunning day.

They are all unique individuals.

He's got a passion, a unique obsession, that never lets up.

And, and to tell me, "I didn't know who else to call." Seemed just out of line.
