Genesis 5

Enoch walked with God.

Genesis 5 verse 22-24 Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations and walked with God.

Genesis 6 verse 9 I am the Almighty God, walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Genesis 17 verse 1 He hath showed thee, O man, what is good, and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.

your bibles there this morning and if you do please turn with me back to the genesis book of genesis please and chapter four of genesis and chapter 4 for our message this morning.

If you're just joining us, we are going through the book of Genesis on Sunday mornings.

Wonderful book, the very first book of the Bible, very foundational to the whole Christian faith.

So important that you get a good grasp on the truths of the book of Genesis.

Well, this morning we're looking at light versus darkness and really what we're doing is looking at the ungodly family line of Cain versus the godly line of seth and that's what we're looking at this morning so we're going to be dealing with the chapter 5 genealogy but fear not there's going to be some gems to pick up as we go through as is often the case in the genealogies of the bible This morning we're just going to, for our reading, read from verse 16 of chapter 4 to the end of the chapter there and then we'll read and study as we go when we get to chapter 5 in the message.

But reading in chapter 4 and verse 16, the Bible reads, "...and Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden." And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bare Enoch, and he built a city and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.

You say, well, what's the use of having these genealogies in the Bible? Well, let me just give you a few thoughts here.

The Bible says here, let's read down through verse number 24.

Genesis 5:18.

"And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch." Phew.

Am I glad times have changed.

That's all they have is, "My great-grandfather told me such and such about the Lord." Now look, we have such a privilege with the Word of God, and here Enoch just said, "Whatever God says, I wanna do that.

I wanna walk with him by faith." Not only that, but he did it day after day.

Because Genesis 5:22 and 24 said that he walked with God 300 years after having Methuselah, and he's taken away at 365.

For 300 years, every day, Enoch said, "Whatever you say, God, I'm going to believe it and I'm gonna act on it." That's a man of faith.

And without faith it is impossible to please him.

Jude writes that Enoch preached the coming judgment of God, but in Genesis 5 we don't find any record of any preaching.

Presumably, he still lived in Mesopotamia.

That's where the Garden of Eden was, in the cities of Babylon and Nineveh.

And what he's suggesting is that the very name Methuselah means that when he dies, the flood will come upon the earth.

The name is made up of two common Hebrew words, Muth, which means to die, and Shelach, which means to send.

Now, Methuselah is last mentioned in Genesis 5, verse 27, where it says, So all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.

Now, looking at all that, we can say that Enoch prophesied when his first son was born, he prophesied that judgment was coming from God himself, and he did the prophecy through the naming of his son.

Subtitle of my message is the supremacy of Jesus Christ over sin, death, religion, and the ruin of Adam.

Every person since Genesis 5.3 has been born naturally in Adam.

Turn to Genesis 5.3 and I'll show you what I mean.

In Genesis 5, verse 3, we see something incredible taking place that is quite often overlooked in our church-age society that we live in.

Genesis 5, let's start in verse 1.

This is the book of the generations of Adam.

In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him.

You were not made in the image of God.

It's equally a part, and it ties into exactly what you're saying, this idea of building.

I think Genesis 5 lets us peek further behind the curtain to understand that our understanding here is exactly the correct interpretation.

This is what I mean.

The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Yeah, I would say it's just a different form of narrative and a different form of conception of what we need to do.

The Bible tells us the story of humanity and specifically of a certain people within humanity that have a covenant with God, right? Ze sefer toldot adam, it says in Genesis 5.

The

book of the generations of Adam, as we traditionally translate that.

Look at verse number 29.

Genesis 5, 29.

And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work, and toil of our hands because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed.

So he's looking at his environment, he's looking at this ground, and he's saying Noah's going to bring us comfort because of all this work from this ground that was cursed.

But for Enoch to walk with God by faith means from how he beget, to what he ate, to how he slept, to where he went, all was by faith.

How do I know this? How do I know this, the just shall live by faith? How do I know this? The Bible says in Genesis 5:21, when Enoch was 65 years, he begat Methuselah.

The verse 22 now says, "And Enoch," after he begat Methuselah, begat...

He said he walked with God after he begat Methuselah and begat other sons and daughters.

Let's do mathematics [laughs].

That's what I'm saying.

In Genesis 5:3, the Bible says, "And Adam was 130 years and begat a son after his own kind." He begat a son after his own kind and named him Seth.

So, so you can see something that's happening here.
