Genesis 40

He's falsely accused and imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit.

He helps Pharaoh's cupbearer ask to be remembered, and Genesis 40, 23 tells us plainly, the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him for two more full years, according to the next chapter.

Most historians estimate 13 years passed from the pit to the palace.

13 years that lived day by day gave no indication anything was being built.

And finally, finally, Joseph sees a way out and he says to him, "'When all goes well with you, remember me.

"'Mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison, please.'" And the cup bearer gets out and Genesis 40 actually ends with this.

It says, the chief cup bearer, however, did not remember Joseph.

He forgot him.

Oh, definitely.

And, you know, so the next big moment, we go into Genesis 40, and, you know, in 43, it talks about how Joseph was able to, well, not Joseph, but the guys that They had a situation that happened in jail.

And Joseph, the chief butler, he remembered how Joseph had, because basically both guys had a dream.

They talked to Joseph about it.

And I love this.

In Genesis 40, verse 14, we have both meanings.

Joseph is speaking to the cupbearer whose dream he has just interpreted.

He also interpreted the dream for the baker.

Actually, prophetically, when you go to Genesis, uh, 35, when, uh, God told Jacob that he would become a company of nations.

When you go to Genesis 40, I think it's 40, could be 42, when Ephraim was prophesied to be a company of nations.

When Sarah in Genesis, uh, 18, when she was told she would be a mother of nations.

So in Genesis, which means the beginning, it's a prophecy of what the children of Israel would become.

I mean, the rise in Joseph's life could only be described in today's passage as meteoric, right? Meteoric.

I mean, take the end of Genesis 40 and the first verse in Genesis 41, okay? This is what it says.

"The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him." Next verse.

"When two full years had passed." Right? He's in prison, forgotten.

Dreams are a big part of this story, okay? Anyway, so Pharaoh has tried all his mystics.

He gets nothing from them.

And then the cupbearer remembers, okay? Now, we didn't really spend too much time dealing with this the other week, but, uh, in the prison sort of story of what's going on in Genesis 40, um, he's, Joseph is thrown into prison, as we found out last week, for being accused of sleeping with his master's wife, which he didn't do, but he gets thrown into jail, right? When he's in jail, there's two other guys there.

There is the cupbearer, and there is the cook, okay? Now, what we can assume is maybe there's been some sort of plot to poison Pharaoh, or he's heard that someone's trying to poison him, hence the cook and the cupbearer have both been thrown into prison.
