Stanford CS229 Machine Learning | Spring 2026 | Lecture 5: Gaussian Discriminant Analysis
C
1:40Chris RéHOST
We're gonna talk about Gaussian discriminant analysis.
C
1:43Chris RéHOST
So this is gonna be our first foray into generative models.
C
1:46Chris RéHOST
These generative models are pretty interesting because, you know, they're the G in GPT.
C
1:51Chris RéHOST
So you hear the ChatGPT, it's generative pre-trained transformers.
C
1:54Chris RéHOST
Um, we'll maybe do pre-training a little bit later, maybe transformers a little bit later, but today we're getting our first example of a generative algorithm.
C
2:22Chris RéHOST
We're gonna talk a little bit about this generative versus discriminative thing that I've just been mentioning.
C
2:26Chris RéHOST
These are a different class of these algorithms.

I would say one kind of side note, when we, we teach these lectures like, I don't know, six, seven years ago, whenever it was, when you talk about these generative models, people, like, weren't that interested in the generative models because they didn't seem like they got to state-of-the-art performance, right? But now they get to, uh, you know, they are responsible for a lot of the growth in AI, and the fact that they're learning these representations is actually quite valuable, okay? All right.
