Generation ship

The most common response to the timescale problem of interstellar travel is a concept so deeply embedded in science fiction that many people treat it as an inevitability rather than a hypothesis.

Engineers and scientists call it the generation ship.

On paper, it solves the energy problem by surrendering to time.

But surrendering to time means living inside time for the entire duration of the crossing.

Every problem examined here shares a single root cause.

The journey takes too long for any system built by human hands, biological or mechanical, to survive without catastrophic failure.

And catastrophic failure on an interstellar generation ship does not mean a cost overrun or a delayed schedule.

It means the death of every person aboard, in the most complete isolation any human community has ever experienced, with no one coming to help.
