General Convention of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America

To go back, indeed, I have gone and shall go wheresoever my memory leads me without regard to chronology in these rambling reminiscences.

Shortly after the first baptism, the Dean, the Bishop, and the Honorary Canons went to the General Convention and left me in charge of the Cathedral.

It was a noble position, and I enjoyed it extremely.

As each Sunday came around, the temptation to preach without notes would recur with added force, and finally on the last Sunday before they all came back, I resolved to try it once more.

As a result of the peculiar contest, the congregation of the church is divided.

In the Episcopal Convention, Reverend Joseph Dunn of Southern Virginia declared that the emancipation of the Negroes was a dire disaster and that the church by this act has forty-five years of misguidance to undo.

At the late Episcopal Convention, Mr. James H. Dillard, agent of the James Fund, declared it was dangerous to generalize on any subject connected with the Negro life.

The race contained many devout and able men who are fully qualified, he believed, to be the spiritual leaders of their people in the episcopate.

He frankly admitted, in effect, that the proposed plan of racial bishops would result in the ecclesiastical segregation of Negro churchmen, but he justified this by pointing to the strong tendency to segregation now taking place in everyday life.

The same procedure is followed in electing delegates as in electing officers.

Industrial departments hold conventions and nominate the delegates that are elected to the general convention.

Delegates to the General Convention nominate candidates for the officers of the General Organization.

These General Officers are elected by the vote of the entire organization.

The General Executive Board is composed of one member from each industrial department and is selected by the membership of that department.

General Conventions are held annually at present.

The rule in determining the wages of the officers of all parts of the organization is to pay the officers who are needed approximately the same wages they would receive when employed in the industry in which they work.
