Gene Colan

That's amazing.

You know, you'll appreciate... being the crime film guy that you are, I interviewed Gene Colan, and there's a great car chase scene in Captain America with the Red Skull.

It was right after Steranko's three-issue Captain America run.

And he really wanted to model it after Bullet.

So he made him cut it down to like three or four.

But yeah, that cracked me up.

Yeah, thanks for mentioning Gene Colan.

Probably, you know, arguably the most noir, certainly the most noir artist at Marvel.

Which, in comparison to a lot of other people at the time, is quite different.

I mean, it's not like what Gene Colan would be doing.

It's not what Neil Adams would be doing.

Yeah.

These are all the creators who were born in September of 1926, so they're all celebrating their 100-year birthday wherever they are.

Gaspar Saladino was born September 1st of 1926, Gene Colan was also born September 1st, Joe Kubert was born September 18th, 1926, and Russ Heath was born September 29th.

Four wonderful creators, four creators who made a name for themselves in all the various ways.

you know gasper saladino as a letter and a logo designer gene colin joe cubert you know the they're you know two very different artists but where they specialized you know definitely we are better for having them russ heath the same way i thought it was interesting that gasper saladino was born september 1st in brooklyn and gene colin was born september 1st in the bronx um so yeah 100 years for all of those creators All right, that wraps up Timeline Tuesday for September Part 2.

We start out here with this incredible splash page.

This reminds me of a moody splash page you would have seen from Gene Colan and Tom Palmer in Tomb of Dracula or something.

Yeah, absolutely.

I mean, this splash page here is a little bit different than what you get in some of these older comics.

All right.

Uh, for me, I got actually a wonder woman number two 88 from February and 1982 little Roy Thomas, right? And this one, uh, Jean Colin on the pencils, uh, And then you have your cover by Gene Colan as well.

It's just pretty cool.

It says, look out world, the sensational new Wonder Woman is busting loose again, courtesy of Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, and Romeo Tegel.

And it's interesting, like they got the mobsters all shooting the guns that are like bracelets and you see the bolts bouncing off.

And there's just like one of the mobsters is saying, and this time nothing will stop her.

... and to this day, Arthur, I can't, I can't fathom.

Number eight ended with a very interesting fight that was about to happen on our hands where our buddy Jonathan Lord, Silverblade, and his newfound... son I guess we can say our Native American buddy there that we originally thought he was evil and then we found out he's not evil but it left us in a really precarious spot as the Native American guy and our buddy Silverblade aka Satan I guess we'll refer to him as here were face to face with the winged Avenger guy that looks nigh unstoppable and that's where 8 ended and Core Stock brings us into 9, which is a cover dated June 1988.

It has a cover by Gene Colan and Steve Mitchell.

And we have had some very dynamic covers so far in this series.

But I will admit, this one, I don't know, I hate to say it's my favorite, but it might be my favorite.

from the story we're familiar with, transposed over who they are in this reality, or whatever you want to call it.

But it's a neat couple pages, and as always, it's really, really cool to see it in the black and white.

Yeah, I mean, you can't go wrong with Gene Colan.

That's always going to be a highlight there.
