After that, he found it difficult to settle on a career.

What did interest him was the Gate Theatre on Cavendish Row in Dublin.

He spent a lot of time there, watching rehearsals, auditioning and taking small walk-on parts.

But they weren't paid roles and Edward wasn't making a living from acting.

Eventually he said that because the Gardaí already knew Laveena was missing before he did, he hadn't thought it was necessary to report it himself.

Dunleavy also asked him to go through his movements on Tuesday.

Edward said he'd gone into town about work, called to the sweepstakes office, had lunch in a cafe and visited the Gate Theatre before going to his father's house.

But when he was asked about carrying a suitcase out of St Helens Road, he denied having one.

And, uh, he wrote the f- one of the first modern plays in Irish, uh, Diarmuid a gRónaí, and, uh, uh, was, uh, clearly a very good actor, a rather wonderful actor.

And he met the sort of, uh, partner of his life, a Michael Hilton Edwards, and they'd together decided to form a company which became the Gate Theatre in Dublin.

Now, bring yourself into this story.

Yeah.

And Maura was the most wonderful actor there.

You had people like Michal MacLean-Moore, actor, writer and founder of the Gate Theatre in Dublin himself, saying that he just singled her out.

He just couldn't believe how absolutely amazing a performer she was.

But in 51, Eamon and Moore play opposite each other and a love story begins.

Do you know what I mean? Jesus, love, the drug addicts on Connaught Street are out of control.

[laughs] I told you this, didn't I? Up at the Gate Theatre, going into the Gate, I never met more addicts in me life.

God love them.

God love them.

I know.

And my heart goes out to them, but at the same time, you're thinking, "I'm going into the Gate Theatre now, and I'm, I'm running into a half a dozen creators who are out of their minds."

I know.

I don't know.

These are the productions that have already happened this year.

Uh, City Theatre Company in Pittsburgh, Theatre J in D.C., Mendocino Theatre, Gate Theatre in Dublin.

This summer, Gage Theatre, Gage Stage in Florida, the Huntington Theatre, which is the most notable, I think, large production in Boston did it this past summer.

The Barnstormers in New Hampshire did the Hanger Theater in Ithaca.

Well, we also had the restaurant, but it was turning over such a low amount of money, we wouldn't have survived.

It started kicking off about 1998, and it was the Gate Theatre.

We got a write-up in the Sunday Business Post from a food writer called Neil Clancy, and he basically said, you know, the real show was the restaurant we went to beforehand, and Somehow that kicked it on and it started gaining traction and everyone coming to the gate, which we had a long relationship with over the years, started coming to pre-theater and it became a really, really serious product.

When I left the kitchen in 2021 or whatever...

You know, we were doing 50 a night, every night.

It was really strong.

That product between going to the Gate Theatre and coming to Chapter One, it had a huge following.

And when did Michelin come knocking?

and £1.10 from his father per week without any real prospects on the horizon.

Edward found some solace in the Gate Theatre on Cavendish Row, where he spent most of his days watching rehearsals and auditioning for roles with the Gate Theatre players whenever the opportunity arose.

While he did manage to get some small walk-on parts, he was yet to earn a leading role and was never actually paid for his brief performances.

considering he was straight out of school at the time.

But as bad as things were in the ball home, they were about to get much worse.

Following Richard's visit, Edward returned to live at his flat and began to devote even more time to the theatre.

In February 1936, the Gate Theatre Players announced to their actors and crew that they were going to embark on a tour of Egypt that would include a special performance at the Royal Opera House Cairo on St. Patrick's Day, a performance that would be broadcast on Egyptian national radio.

This must have seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and for Edward a chance to leave his troubles behind.

First this evening to Meredith, a new play by acclaimed Irish playwright Erica Murray, which opens at the Gate Theatre this month as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival.

The play is a sharp and deeply human family drama that explores themes of ageing, motherhood, freedom and responsibility.

Set over a single Sunday afternoon in Meredith's Orangery in County Meath...
