Gate of Flesh

Just left the house, pushing my son in the pram, hoping he falls asleep.

The wife and the daughter at um swimming lessons right now so we're going to meet off at ikea um but it might be a good opportunity to get out a voice note on the film i watched last night gate of flesh 1964 japanese movie I don't know the name of the director or anyone involved so forgive me I don't have a screen in front of me so I can't make attempts at pronouncing Japanese names but I watched it because you include it in Criterion Week which you're doing at the moment and Yeah, I thought it looked interesting.

I've watched quite a few films from the 50s and 60s for the last six months or so.

And also watched High and Low, another Japanese film, which I think, I don't have the information to hand, but I think might have actually been from the same release year as Gate of Flesh, 1964.

Could be wrong on that score, but it was interesting watching this film.

And thinking about High and Low, again, I might be wrong that they're from the same release year, but High and Low is not a period piece.

It's, I guess, set whenever it was released.

So High and Low gives you a portrait of what urban Japan looked like the year Gate of Flesh came out.
