Taking the S from Schrader, the A from Otto Ambros, the R from Gerhard Ritter, and confusingly, the UN from a guy called Von der Linde, they christened it Sarin.

It was the dawning of a dark new age, the age of nerve gases.

And the Third Reich would go all in on producing them.

In a forest outside the city of Münster, a plant was set up for manufacturing Tabun on an industrial scale.

In the chaos of war, it may have been impossible for Hitler to be certain that the Allies hadn't developed their own nerve agents.

The Fuhrer's hesitancy may have been due to worrying that dropping Sarin on London would result in its British equivalent being dropped on Berlin.

In fact, the Allies very nearly did get a chance about their own nerve gases.

In May of 1943, the Tunisia campaign ended with the Allies taking a quarter of a million prisoners.

Oh, oh, okay.

Gaseous, gaseous-

Bubbling does not, by itself, establish that water is boiling.

Gas passing through a liquid can disturb its surface without the liquid reaching its boiling point.

We should therefore allow the name to describe the appearance without making it prove something about heat.

This is a small but helpful habit when looking at unfamiliar ground.

Beneath the fields, then, the layers have both an order and a changing orientation.

Their compacted interiors, folded beds and fractured zones establish the conditions through which material must pass.

Within that layered structure, Gas supplies another part of the explanation.

The principal gas associated with the Birka mud volcanoes is methane.
