Before we talk Gary Jules, we must also mention Michael Andrews, because confession time, I had no idea that Michael Andrews was involved in the song because I've only ever heard Gary Jules attached to the song.

And not only was Michael Andrews involved in it, he's the reason the song exists today.

So let's get into this, shall we? This is from the Donnie Darko soundtrack released in 2002.

In 2001, director Richard Kelly commissioned Andrews to score the cult classic Donnie Darko.

Andrews has scored numerous major films, including Me and You and Everyone We Know, Walk Hard, The Dewey Cox Story, Bridesmaids, Bad Neighbors, and The Big Sick.

Gary Jules, also at 1.2 million monthly listeners, is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter, best known for his haunting stripped-down cover of the Cheers for Fear song Mad World, recorded alongside his childhood friend and composer, Michael Andrews, for the 2001 cult classic film Donnie Darko.
