I'll take care of that.

So I hired, fortunately, Charles Lloyd, Willie Higgins, Jerry Allen, a young bass player, I forget his name, Sid Page, who's a great violinist, and Gary Burton.

and to do this score.

And it's all improvised.

But to hear the bass clarinet coming in, you hear the Courtney Pine, you hear the Wayne Shorter, you hear some of the greats of the past, and it made sense why I was reading earlier that although they used to stick with the usuals, what you could hear from the past, their influences, they began to branch out on this album to do their own thing.

And that led me to the Pat Metheny concept with Gary Burton.

You know, don't bring a record unless you really, really, really know it's you and that it stands out.

I'll turn you down on everything.

Last week, yeah.

Now, he did not record on the album we had looked at, but he has recorded with Jim Black and Chris Speed.

Kurt has also recorded with Gary Burton and Danilo Perez, which is a name that we should begin to know.

Daniel Perez was part of the band with Wayne Shorter from 2000 on.

You know, took what Milt did and added sort of elements of free and, you know, more 1960s modern jazz to it.

And, you know, then you've got Gary Burton.

And, I mean, the...

Now, actually, now I have the feeling the vibraphone is kind of the hip instrument.

And also the whole time I was there I played in the jazz band anyway, so I kind of got to do everything all at once at Ithaca.

And then after that, uh, like, about my sophomore year is when I was like...

That's when I first really heard, like, Milt Jackson and Gary Burton.

And, you know, I had been sort of studying solo marimba and learning four mallet marimba pieces, and got, like, reasonably good at that.

Okay.

I got – well, we had – when Gary Burton played on the, on the charity of night, uh, he was the Dean of students at Berkeley.

Sure.

So, uh, that, you know, there was that contact.

The album's called In Passing, a quartet with John Sermon on saxophone, Eddie Gomez on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums.

It featured guitarist Montgomery with Wynton Kelly piano, Paul Chambers bass, and Jimmy Cobb drums, and arrangements post the live recording by Klaus Ogerman.
