Garfield High School

At some peer-led violence prevention.

And as you mentioned in the bio, right, I was also part of Athletes As Leaders, which was a sexual violence prevention curriculum started in Seattle, piloted at Garfield High School, and it gave me the space in a team environment that was w- was something I had never had access to before, and it was so powerful and taught me so many important lessons, kind of gave me the language and the tools to talk about some of these tensions that we're being introduced to for the first time in high school, right? Like, we're starting our first potential romantic relationships, right? We're navigating the sexualization of our bodies.

We're navigating social status and peer pressure and alcohol and all of these other kind of parts of society that we practice over time.

It's our first shot at it in high school, and so going through Athletes As Leaders was really pivotal for me, and I was excited to join a collegiate community that, in my mind, was going to, like, be on the same page with me, that we were going to get a second shot at doing this, like, human togetherness thing-

And they voted on a strike authorization during the union's general membership meeting in downtown Seattle this week.

The meeting itself wasn't open to the media, but after the meeting wrapped up, I had the chance to talk to Aubrey Franson, who is a paraprofessional and will be working at Garfield High School in the fall.

During the meeting, Franson said he learned that the district and the union haven't worked out an agreement over funding for interpreters, which matters to him because he works with special education students who are multilingual.

Here's what he had to say outside of the union's meeting.

As episodes of Adults in the Room dropped, I was contacted by dozens of people about their experiences with Garfield High School science teacher Tom Hudson, who was on the faculty there until his death in 2000.

Some men told me how Mr. Hudson had pressured them to shower naked with him when they were students at Garfield, much like Jonathan Hill, who we introduced in episode four.

Others said they had quit Mr. Hudson's outdoors program because he made them uncomfortable.

But up to this point in the years that I've been investigating this story, no one had admitted to me that Mr. Hudson laid hands on them sexually.

It was a harrowing and deeply emotional conversation.

But that wasn't all.

If you've listened to this series, you know that my best friend, Ella Hushagen, and I were students at Garfield in the late 1990s and heard rumors that Mr. Hudson was abusing boys there.
