But there's a less well-known example of this fiction, which is the 2010 film Monsters, and that involves two people travelling through an infected zone in Mexico.

It's got a great soundtrack by John Hopkins and the writer and director is Gareth Edwards who then did Rogue One and most recently Jurassic World Rebirth which my son can't stop talking about.

So Monsters is another example of land distortion following an extraterrestrial visitation but the plot is actually about the journey through rather than studying or fighting the area.

specifically it's about a journalist escorting his boss's daughter from Central America back to the US and owing to a series of mistakes and bad luck they end up with no choice but to travel through the zone of course if it's a game scenario with role players you need to omit all the bits in the run-up to the journey itself because the film's protagonists have so many opportunities not to put themselves in a terrible predicament and they fail at each step and I think that your players would probably end up fighting you on that, and you wouldn't get them to go through the zone after all, which would make for a short adventure.

Okay, let's unpack this, because today we are taking a deep dive into notes from Real Talk Reviews covering Jurassic World Rebirth.

And setting aside the fact that Gareth Edwards is directing the soft reset, I just want to know why on earth these characters are willingly going back to a dinosaur-infested island.

Have we learned literally nothing?

Well, desperation kind of overrides common sense, right? We are five years out from Dominion now, and the global context is just completely different.

And so I think more people went and saw Rogue One than might have if it was released this week.

But because that movie, thanks to Tony Gilroy and Gareth Edwards and everyone else that worked on that movie, did enough... to show us these relationships and allow us to understand the dynamics between those characters, uh, within the context of that individual story, that movie has resonated and it has had a staying power, uh, that, uh, I don't know if any other star Wars movie has had yet, uh, of this era, again, of this Disney era, we're, we're not talking about the Lucas movies when we talk, when you say that, um, So I think I, you know, again, I think there's a certain amount of, you know, trust the audience to figure it out.

But I think the audience has to, you know, believe in themselves a little bit, you know, believe in themselves and just and just go.

go in and be like okay does this movie sound good great i'm gonna go i'm gonna go watch it and if i don't understand it that's a failing on the movie it's not a failing on me for not having seen all of falcon and the winter soldier or all of mandalorian or all of whatever and and look we've seen the pendulum start to swing the other way this is why we you and i have been we really went at the screenwriter of Starfighter a couple of weeks ago because he said the movie was simple.

You know, uh, my pick is, it's like, okay, if you can't have Christopher Nolan, you can't have Denis Villeneuve, uh, like, who, who's out there that can handle, you know, that, that level of scale? The guy I...

... of Rogue One.

This should also light a fire under Universal to fix their Jurassic franchise, which, you know, all that first, the world trilogy all made a billion, even when they weren't great, but Rebirth fell short.

And speaking of directors, Gareth Edwards just dropped out of the sequel.

He got the gig after David Leitch had to also creatively drop out of the first Rebirth.

And so Universal hasn't decided on a director yet.
