Galveston Island

Back to Galveston in the Gulf area for just a moment, where officials are concerned about the return of an unwelcome visitor after a three-year absence.

Red tide is being reported around Galveston Island and the Boulevard Peninsula.

Texas Parks and Wildlife says concentrations of the toxic algae are moderate to high in some locations, resulting in large fish kills and reports of respiratory symptoms in humans.

Several shellfish harvesting areas have also been closed.

Oh, really? It's almost Freeport.

Galveston Island is long.

I was living there and I'm like, man, where is this place? But I had the, you know, I had the GPS on, so it was all good.

Yep.

It is thundering on Galveston Island right now.

Well, be careful.

Uh, there was a, there was a tropical storm that ripped through the area.

And I knew it might not be a pure red wolf, but we'll learn that that may not necessarily be something that's in existence.

Because we've learned now through animals found on Galveston Island that there are animals that have red wolf DNA that's not even in the captive breeding program.

We had an episode here on Dark Outdoors, go back and listen, where Colossal Bioscience, who brought back the dire wolf through cloning, are working with genetics of some of these animals that have red wolf DNA.

And that's absolutely what I was looking at.

She was an endangered species specialist with Texas Parks and Wildlife.

And she said that there were animals, this is back in 1992, that had red wolf genes still running the countryside.

In 2018, I won an Excellence in Craft Award from the Texas Outdoor Writers Association for breaking the story about the red wolf DNA found on Galveston Island.

If it's there, it's in other places.

That was going to be the end of that.

There wouldn't be any more Strand or King's Confectionery, Candy Store, any of the other fun things you'd find on Galveston Island.

And last time I checked, it's all right where they left it.

You're not going to have a lot of wind down there.

You will have some heavy rain and some bands, but this isn't going to be any type of significant tropical system for even the Galveston Island area.
