Gabriele Amorth

I don't have one in mind.

The only thing that does come to mind is I know that Ignatius Press, remember I was talking yesterday about the issue of celebrity exorcists, and one exorcist whose books I found great benefit from, that's Father Gabriel Amorth, may he rest in peace, remember him?

I wasn't listening yesterday.

Well, it turns out that he, and I saw this in the catalog, but he wrote a book about Padre Pio because he knew him.

Father Gabriel Amorth died recently.

He was an old dude when he died, so he was a contemporary writer.

But especially back in the days when Harry Potter was much more prominent, it was much more talked about, I guess.

And I remember Father Gabriel Amorth, who made a big splash years ago when he came out with his first book called An Exorcist Tells His Story.

And although I don't recall now, because I did read that book when it first came out, I don't recall now whether this is mentioned in that first volume.

There was a subsequent volume by him.

So he's an exorcist whom I trust.

He's gone on to his eternal reward, but he's an exorcist whom I trust.

And one thing I liked about him was that, and this is Father Gabriel Amorth, he too was quite elderly.

So maybe it was a function of that.

Absolutely.

And you have, like, Gabriel Amorth, Adam Blai, Malachi Martin, um, some of your most prolific and experienced exorcists will talk about cases of their worst demoniacs, where in the event of the exorcism, as they're trying to get rid of the entity, the entity will literally, like literally, this is crazy, regurgitate apports out of the cavity of the possessed.

Hmm.

Now, what's there, there's two different data points here.

So knowing that, Steve and I were kind of bouncing around some ideas, and we got into my field, which was demonology, and wouldn't you know, we see the same mechanism being weaponized in the most malevolent hauntings, most malevolent possession cases.

Think Gabriel Amorth, Malachi Martin, Adam Blai, and, and, okay? Uh, the demoniac will...

He's- They're battling, right? It's like good and evil and everything, and then you have the, the priest, their exorcist, is, "Okay, I'm trying to get this entity out of you.

The phenomenon's gotta leave." But the phenomenon doesn't wanna leave, Tony.

It's based on a real person.

His name's Fa- Father Gabriel Amorth.

Uh, he was the chief, uh, exorcist of the Vatican, and the film is adapted from his memoirs.

Uh, Sean, have you seen this film?

The English is a little bit strange, but what he's, what Carl Wickland, who is a psychiatrist, is saying, is just first class.

Raymond Gray, sweet, the, um, he, he's a bit crusty, but also he's the [laughs] good thing.

Um, Gabriel Amorth is interesting to read 'cause it, it shows that the, the difference between, um, [clears throat] a non-religious person like myself doing an exorcism, uh, no, sorry.

I meant, uh, Gabriel Amorth, who is a bishop.

And these are actually – there's a priest.

Well, you can just write it back and say, you know what? Father Gabriel Amorth wrote about this and said it's not good.

Father Richard said not good.

Father Rossetti said it's not good.

And their writings, they're pretty clear in their writings, but in practice, they started using the mass in this almost magical way.

As Father Amorth says, there's always a temptation for charismatics, exorcists, and sensitives to bypass the ordinary means of sanctification.

And in so doing, fall into the trap of magic.

And so we can even use the liturgy as magic.

Okay, but the barometer's retaliation, you gotta use that gift within, first of all, the catechism is clear.

If you have a charismatic gift, it should be submitted to the local ordinary.

And Father Amorth also says that be careful of false charismatics because there are many of them.

Anyone that says I have a gift probably does not because the true charismatic wants to be hidden.

In fact, he actually, according to his diary, or at least one of his friends, an exorcist by the name of Gabriel...

Amorth?

Mammoth? Well...

They described that one during an exorcism, that a demon said that they were going to mislead more people away through the Eucharist by hand or something.

Okay, now, number one— What could be in reference there of a demon misleading people could be in reference to people committing Eucharistic abuses by stealing hosts.

That has occurred a lot in the past.

That very well could be what Father Amorth was referring to.

I do not know.
