Fyodor Karamazov

As we just say a corporate prayer of confession here in a few minutes, say, Lord, show me where I need to confess to you because I know that I will deceive myself every single time.

Dostoevsky in his book Brothers Karamazov is a wonderful back and forth between this righteous, faithful old monk named Elder Zosima and Fyodor Karamazov, the scoundrelly father who because of shame and failure as a father has now just kind of owned all of his wickedness and sin.

He just goes about as really just a complete scoundrel about town and he's harassing his own children And he's withholding his inheritance from them so that they suffer.

And he's brought into the room with this incredibly faithful Christian monk.
