G
0:45Gregg NunziataHOST
It's out now from the University of Notre Dame Press.
G
0:48Gregg NunziataHOST
Stephanie's writings have appeared in many distinguished national publications, including U.S. News & World Report, The New York Times, America Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and elsewhere in print and online.
G
4:42Gregg NunziataHOST
So so let's maybe before we move on a little bit further, it is America 250 and you mentioned the founding.
G
4:49Gregg NunziataHOST
So can you can you just go a little bit deeper into that? What are what were kind of actual identifiable? Who were the traditionalists and the virtue, the voices for virtue and who were the voices of freedom and and who kind of weave them together in our founding? How did that look? How did that intellectual soup at the founding look?
S
5:07Stephanie SladeGUEST
So I have a piece in Reason's America 250 issue, which came out in July, that kind of spells this out in more detail.
S
5:13Stephanie SladeGUEST
But my argument is basically all of the founders were essentially, maybe there were a few exceptions, but you read through the sort of writings of the most famous founding fathers, and you see them constantly coming back to this idea that although they were establishing a system of constitutional government institutions, in which powers would be separated.
Won't You Think of the Children?
G
7:18Geoff ShullenbergerPANELIST
Because if you're doing that here, you're saying, well, these companies that are radically revolutionary in their ambitions, that are openly promising, in many cases, not simply the sort of overthrow of the existing order, but the overthrow of the human race itself by this sort of superior future race of synthetic intelligences, If your attitude is a laissez-faire one, is one that says, well, we just have to let businesses pursue their profits, and through the working of the invisible hand, this will redound to the benefit of all of us, and we can just let civil society and its institutions constrain and limit that without the state having to intervene.
G
8:09Geoff ShullenbergerPANELIST
And so, and I hinted at this in the review of the Fusionism book, I believe, but I do think it's an interesting kind of crisis moment for that entire philosophy.
G
8:18Geoff ShullenbergerPANELIST
And this point has been made, you know, can laissez-faire be a conservative philosophy? is a critique that's been made many times by many people over the years.
G
8:30Geoff ShullenbergerPANELIST
But I do think when you have a dominant industry that is so openly revolutionary in its ambitions, the question is, can you just let such an industry commandeer the fate of the human race in the way that it imagines? or proposes to, or does the state simply have to step in and intervene in the name of some sort of conservative principle? And so it seems very straightforward that that's kind of what's happening here philosophically beyond what's going on with the political maneuvering that I do think you're seeing, you know, basically a faction of the GOP trying to get ahead of this issue, which is probably not going to...
‘This Is Western Civilization, Bro’ | Interview: Stephanie Slade

But anyway, it's a great magazine.
J

And she's the author of Fusionism: Liberty, Virtue, and the Future of the American Right.
J
2:36Jonah GoldbergHOST
I mean, she's written for all sorts of places.
J

We, we ran an excerpt from her book at The Dispatch, which we were happy to do.
J
2:54Jonah GoldbergHOST
What's your book about?
S
2:55Stephanie SladeGUEST
Okay.
S
2:56Stephanie SladeGUEST
So Fusionism is a history of the idea of fusionism, which is to say it's a history of the idea that I argue, I don't think this is super controversial, sort of became the intellectual foundation for the conservative movement as we know it, that emerged in the post-war, you know, post-World War II era.
S
3:12Stephanie SladeGUEST
And that was essentially a consensus sort of set of philosophical commitments on the American right up until about 10 years ago when that consensus broke down.
How conservatism went from Reagan to Trump
M
3:04Megan McArdleHOST
For a long time, fusionism was conservatism as far as a lot of people were concerned.
M
3:08Megan McArdleHOST
Limited government, free enterprise, religious faith, and traditional morality just simply seemed to belong together, like chocolate and peanut butter in a Reese's peanut butter cup.
M
3:17Megan McArdleHOST
So how did that consensus break down? Was fusionism ever a durable philosophy or was it just a temporary alliance? And how did the American right travel from Reagan to Trump? Beyond that, does fusionism still have a future? To explain all that, I'm joined by Stephanie Slade, a senior editor at Reason and the author of a new book, Fusionism, Liberty, Virtue, and the Future of the American Right.
M
3:43Megan McArdleHOST
We're going to discuss the intellectual battle that created modern conservatism, the forces pulling it apart today, and whether this largely forgotten philosophy still has something to offer the American right and the American people.
M
3:58Megan McArdleHOST
All right, Stephanie, welcome to the show and congratulations on the new book.
Does CNN Deserve To Be Banned From the White House?
P
51:09Peter SudermanHOST
So how's that going? Tell us what the book is about and how it sort of, what it means for today's politics.
S
51:17Stephanie SladeGUEST
Yes, I'm very excited that my book Fusionism is finally out about not quite three weeks ago.
S
51:23Stephanie SladeGUEST
This is a story of the ideas that used to animate the conservative movement in America, that conservatives in the American context used to claim to stand for, which is the fusion of liberty and virtue or the classical liberal political tradition and the Judeo-Christian moral tradition.
S
51:38Stephanie SladeGUEST
And this was very much a consensus position within the conservative movement for many decades.
S
54:44Stephanie SladeGUEST
It's actually not a great time for the dissident, right? And so I think there's a new appetite for alternatives.
S
54:51Stephanie SladeGUEST
And that's why at least I hope that this sort of interjection of resuscitating fusionism maybe will find an audience.
P
55:00Peter SudermanHOST
Nick, what do you think about the interaction between this sort of fusionist worldview, which has its roots in, you know, more conservative magazines and kind of conservative outlets, National Review in particular? How do you think about the interaction between Fusionism, as Slade describes it, and libertarianism, as you have always thought about it.
P
55:21Peter SudermanHOST
Because I know that you have always, something you've always argued, I think quite strongly and effectively is, look, libertarians, some conservatives, we're often friendly.
