The road in front of my house has become like a river, with muddy torrents flowing continuously, Miyata, 55, said August 30 as rising waters encircled his home in the mountains of Fukui Prefecture.

Water filled his warehouse and swept away stacks of firewood.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest level 5 heavy rain emergency warning for more than 300,000 people in the cities of Fukui, Ono, and Katsuyama.

On August 27, he brought water pumps and other equipment to aid recovery efforts in Hakui and Ishikawa Prefecture and Hime and Toyama Prefecture, both hit by record rainfall.

I had just bought a vacuum machine to remove mud and plan to take it to Hime today, but it looks like I may have to use it here instead, he said.

Record rainfall from the night of August 29 through the morning of August 30 caused 22 rivers to overflow, leaving homes, businesses and roads underwater across Fukui Prefecture.

The JMA downgraded its emergency warning later on August 30, and the safety orders were lifted as conditions improved.

Daytime highs are likely to reach 35 degrees in Fukui City and 34 degrees in Ono City.

Both municipalities are located in Fukui Prefecture.

The mercury is expected to climb to 38 degrees in some cities in central and western Japan.
