From Prada to Nada

The new Sense and Sensibility is earthy, it's emotional, it's cerebral, and while I certainly have never pictured this story as one that's meant to be as visually moody as this adaptation is, somehow it works, and for a lot of it, I was pleasantly surprised.

When I got in the theater, the film felt visually sprawling and beautiful and ethereal.

And it had me going, well, it's not as dark as we were thinking.

And there's no way the story diverges as badly as Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights.

We see them in this version anticipating and calculating exactly how much they might get after their father's death, which really front loads the panic of their situation.

It's not that the other adaptations didn't cover their new poverty, but they handled it much more delicately.

The novel itself doesn't hammer on the logistics of their destitution quite as bluntly as this film does.

Austen does establish the financial realities.
