From Beyond

The first film up is from the 1980s.

The other is The Bad Seed, a rather controversial film from the 1950s that delves into the question: Is evil inherited or is it learned through one's environment, through one's family and friends? And Tracy, you're gonna start us off with From Beyond.

So From Beyond, it's a science fiction horror movie from 1986 and directed by Stuart Gordon.

It's loosely based on the short story from H.P. Lovecraft, and it brought together several people who had previously worked on the 1985 movie Re-Animator, which was a really good movie.

Um, this particular movie, again, it stars Jeffrey Combs as scientist Crawford Tillinghast, and Barbara Crampton as the psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn McMichaels.

Yeah, I think it's great.

It's not as perhaps transgressive as something like Stuart Gordon's From Beyond or something like that, where the tentacled monsters and creatures are not just gross and goopy, but also somehow sexual and really kind of disturbing psychologically as well as visually or aesthetically.

But I think that this really taps into the mutation element of Resident Evil in the games in a great way because, you know, you watch any footage from most of those games and there'll be people's heads popping off with tentacles and replacing them sort of stuff.

And yeah, it's got that sort of Grand Guignol, you know, sideshow sort of feeling to it.

It is From Beyond, which is a short story by H.P. Lovecraft and a 1986 science fiction film directed by Stuart Gordon.

Based on the short story of the same name, it is about an obsessive scientist named Dr. Pretorius, played here by Ted Sorrell, who successfully discovers a way to access a parallel universe of pleasure by tapping into the brain's pineal gland.

When he is seemingly killed by forces from this other dimension, his assistant, Dr. Crawford Tillinghast, played by Jeffrey Combs, is accused of the murder.

After psychiatrist Catherine McMichaels, played by Barbara Crampton, and detective Bubba Brownlee, played by Ken Forey, take the case, the trio risks a return to the other world in order to solve the mystery.

Dr. Edward Pretorius is about to embark on such a journey.

The first thing that impresses upon watching from beyond are its creatures and suits.

And that's okay, because at the same time, Stuart Gordon gets hired, gets brought on by Yesna to write the movie.

So he writes this movie, and he brings in Dennis Paoli, who had helped write Reanimator and From Beyond.

Yeah.

So they write the new movie with the concept of he finds out the Pullman affair, and the guy loses his shit.

Oh, yeah.

Or it's like, uh, since I just covered it, From Beyond, Jeffrey Combs' head at the end gets, like, twisted off.

Uh-huh.

It's pretty gross.
