But I think basically it's like, I do have weirdly strong memories of two things in particular, I guess, culturally that I always found really funny.
Tom UsherHOST
25:19
Freedom fries was the number one thing because I remember basically France when the Iraq war happened or there was the Iraq war in 2003, which was actually, again, another war that we kind of fell into because they had weapons of mass destruction.
Tom UsherHOST
25:31
which were obviously fake in the end they didn't actually have these weapons of mass destruction but we said Saddam Hussein had these weapons of mass destruction and because there was such a massive kind of already fever pitch anti kind of Middle Eastern sentiment in the air after 9-11 we were like fuck it yeah of course we're going to do that war why wouldn't we even though there was like a million strong march in London about it protesting it like again that was another thing where it's a bit like That was another big moment in which the general sentiment was incredibly against it, and yet the government just ignored it, which is the kind of thing that didn't used to really happen, now just kind of happens all the time.
Tom UsherHOST
26:04
The idea that the government's completely unaccountable.
Tom UsherHOST
26:24
They just said, hey, we're not going to join the war this time.
Tom UsherHOST
26:26
We'll probably be there for the next one.
Tom UsherHOST
26:28
They basically stopped... serving french fries they actually changed the name french fries to freedom fries they actually did this they actually did this across america in like mcdonald's and all this kind of shit eventually people were like this is kind of insane like why are we doing this um but it's just a really funny concept to kind of i guess explain how hysterical that thing was where even of countries saying we don't want to join in the war we're not even saying hey we're not like They're just saying we don't want to get involved.
Tom UsherHOST
26:53
And they're still being like, right, fuck it.
Eric HalseyHOST
50:12
Yeah, this seems very much like if you weren't in for the Iraq war, then you don't support the troops, just on steroids.
Alex MidwayHOST
50:21
If you're not calling them Freedom Fries, buddy, it's one way ticket to Gitmo.
Eric HalseyHOST
50:25
Yeah, pretty much.
Eric HalseyHOST
50:25
And honestly, Freedom Fries is our Gulf of America, so...
Eric HalseyHOST
50:31

Eric HalseyHOST
50:32

Jeff HarmatzHOST

in the, uh, at home in Ma- in Melrose, Massachusetts, and it was the very first marshmallow cream that you could get, and so it became kinda popular.
Jeff HarmatzHOST
8:42
But during World War I, Americans were encouraged to abstain from eating meat one day a week to show support for the troops, and so one of the inventors of Snowflake Marshmallow Cream invented the Liberty sandwich, which was the Fluffernutter.
Cody JosephHOST
8:58
Oh, that's fun.
Cody JosephHOST
8:59
So the idea probably being like, "Well, if you can't eat meat, we'll just, uh, give you this delicious sweet treat."
Jeff HarmatzHOST
9:30
Yeah.
Jeff HarmatzHOST
9:30
What is the...
Jeff HarmatzHOST
9:31
I'm, uh, very interested in when they call something a Liberty sandwich or Liberty fries or Liberty slaw.
Cody JosephHOST
9:37
Mm-hmm.
Steve QuinnellPANELIST
