Frederick III, Elector Palatine

It made it into a confessional tradition.

which was commissioned at the behest of Frederick III, and I think he did it about 1561.

But this confession wasn't published until 1566, and I don't really know the status of it in the Palatinate, so that's an interesting question I need to research, and I haven't done it yet.

But I know this was received among the English people, and it was received by others as well.

Anyway, so the empire is divided into seven districts or electorates, and one of those covered Heidelberg and some other areas around Heidelberg, and it was known as the Palatinate.

And the Elector Palatinate in 1559 was Frederick III, and he inherited a religiously mixed electorate that had previously been briefly Lutheran, and before that it was Roman Catholic.

And so in the course of just a very few years, A person in the Palatinate could have awakened and been a Roman Catholic.

And then the next day, a Lutheran, some kind of sort of broad Lutheran, a Melanchthonian Lutheran, we might say.

if the elector is a Lutheran, you're a Lutheran.

And now the elector was reformed.

Frederick III was reformed.

And that was a minority religion, well, everywhere, most everywhere in Europe and even in the British Isles in some ways, but especially in Germany, what we think of as Germany.
