Tell us a little bit about some of the things that Ole Miss tells their students regarding that obligation.

Well, it's true that lawyers have specific obligations to uphold the rule of law, and the rule of law is essential to our democracy.

And so when we talk to students, it's not just about representing individual clients, but how important it is that lawyers uphold the rule of law.

So for example, courts can't just take issues up their own initiative.

If a federal judge thinks that some executive order or some act of Congress is unconstitutional, they can't do anything about it unless someone brings a complaint, a case of controversy before the court, and lawyers are the ones that are able to do that.

Another really important obligation, I think, has to do with some of the challenges that we have right now to the independence of the judiciary.

Chief Justice Roberts, Chief Justice of the United States, conservative appointed by President Bush, has made some waves on this lately, criticizing some of the efforts to intimidate judges because of the content of their rulings.
