Fred Foster

It was kind of in between a country and a rock, but it didn't do anything.

And then after I moved to Nashville, when I got with Fred Foster with Combine as a writer and Monument Records, Fred didn't know exactly what to do with me because I was young.

Still.

And so he tried to give me a more modern look and had some makeup people, hair people and get some clothes.

It was on as a writer, but not who was singing Harmony.

And people all around the country were calling to see who the girl singer was because it became a huge record.

And so it was only then that I said to Fred, see, they want to hear me do Country.

And so from that time on, that's what I did.

Originally, the couple planned to have a larger ceremony involving their family and friends.

However, due to pressure from Dolly's record label manager, Fred Foster, who had ordered her not to get married as it would damage her commercial appeal and affect her fanbase from growing if the public discovered that she was a taken woman and not attainable.

The couple instead chose not to listen, and quietly snuck away to Ringgold, Georgia for the weekend, known as the Wedding Capital of the South, where they could secretly elope without waiting periods on marriage licenses.

The only witness present at the time would be Dolly's mother, Avey Lee, as Dolly wore a simple, no frills, homemade knee-length white dress and a short veil that her mother had sewn for her.

That was her first hit as a writer, but nobody knew her name was on it.

In 1965, she signed as an artist with Monument Records, run by Fred Foster, the man who also had Roy Orbison and Kris Kristofferson.

Monument's plan for her was bubblegum pop.

They had a 19-year-old girl from the mountains with one of the most distinctive voices in history of recorded music, and their plan was to make her a teen pop singer.

With a suitcase of songs, she followed her uncle, Bill Owens, also a songwriter, to Nashville after graduating from high school in 1964.

Fred Foster, who produced Roy Orbison, Willie Nelson, and more, saw her potential and got her songs cut by other artists, as well as recording and releasing, part in singing her own material.

By the mid-1970s, Parton was a Nashville queen.

Parton's partnership with Porter Wagner, a pencil-thin, pompadoured star with flashy rhinestone outfits, was key to her career.

But I first met her when she was on Monument Records.

Fred Foster had her signed to, to Monument.

Porter Wagoner, if I understand right, bought her contract from Monument and put her on RCA, and that was the beginning of everything.

But, um, on Monument, she had Something Fishy and Dumb Blonde, and I tell the truth, I was not into sopranos.

The next day, she took a bus to Nashville.

Fred Foster, founder of Monument Records and Combined Publishing, took notice of Parton and released a series of pop singles, even booking her on American Bandstand.

When this direction didn't pan out, Parton wasn't deterred.

In her 2023 book, Behind the Scenes, she wrote that she remembered thinking, I've got the talent if somebody hangs with me long enough.
