His botanical work focuses on the floristic inventory of novel landscapes and the ecology and biogeography of rare species.

He is co-author of the 2020 Vascular Flora of Franklin County, Massachusetts, which is a recent update to the flora of the greater Mount Holyoke Range, which came out earlier, as well as a forthcoming flora of Mount Toby in Massachusetts, just north of Amherst.

Additionally, Peter has published scholarly work in the Emily Dickinson Journal and has presented on Dickinson's herbarium to international audiences.
