Well, the 1970s in Alabama prisons were defined by two landmark rulings by federal judge Frank M. Johnson.

So these were Newman v. Alabama in 1972 and Pew v. Locke in 1976.

And when you ask how bad it was, the conditions were just beyond what most people can even imagine today.
