My name is Joe Alterman, and my next guest is trombonist and composer Ryan Keberle, whose work includes playing with Maria Schneider and leading the group Collective do Brasil.

Before we really get into Brazilian music or jazz or the trombone, I'm just kind of curious what the first music you really remember hearing and resonating with and thinking, I want to be a part of this.

I was very, very lucky.

Both my parents are professional musicians.

That was very influential.

I loved growing up playing Chopin and Brahms and the kind of like Impressionists, Ravel, Debussy were some of my favorite music that I was drawn to as a child.

the musicians and the music you just shared, a lot of that music has violin in it, but I don't know how much of it has trombone in it.

So where did that come in?
